View Full Version : Stock Tweeters w/New Speakers
I just finished installing new 2-way speakers front and rear in my '02. Noticed that there is a separate stock tweeter mounted in the front door panel.
I'm wondering if GM actually put some sort of crossover between the 5-1/2" and the tweeter. If so, am I getting highs to the replacement speaker?
What have you done with the stock tweeter? Reconnected or left disconnected.
Thanks, Bob

Bob- I've been installing Sound systems for a little over ten years now and I've pulled out a lot of GM factory components. I've never pulled anything out of these newer GM trucks, but I'd bet they have the same type of X-over as the rest. It should be a capacitor and a coil shrink wrapped to the wire for the tweeter. I strongly recommend that you leave it disconnected or remove it all together. Extra tweeters tend to add a hissing sound that most people find unpleasant. Another thing to consider is the amount of resistance, measured in ohms, that the head unit can handle. Most after-market head units are designed for a 4 ohm load. Hope this helps.

Is the front speaker a 6.5" and the rear 6.75"? Thats what crutchfield has for our trucks. I am planning on replacing the fronts with component speakers up front, separate tweeter and woofer. For the rear I am just planning a 2 way speaker. Also be adding a 40w x 4 RMS amp to power them.

The fronts are 6.5". Dont know about the back for your CC. The extended cab has 4x6 rears. Got mine from Crutchfield and they were the correct size so I would imagine that they are correct on the CC also.

The metra book I have says 6.5" in all four doors. The 02 silveraro CC I have at work and my truck appear to have 6.5"s. I'll let you know for sure after I pop a door panel off this weekend.

I added some three ways to replace my blown OEM speakers. I connected the OEM tweeters. There is definately too much on the high end. You're getting highs to both. When I get around to it, I'll be disconnecting the OEM tweeters. The radio treble control works for now.
Battmain,
Should be easy to disconnect the stock tweeters. I left the power window switch loose on my while waiting for a reply. Just pull off the scitch panel and you can reach the door tweeter wire.
And, BlueOx, thanks for the info.

FYI...If you are replacing you rear door speaks in a CC watch your mounting depth. The speakers I put in were fairly deep...I found this out the hard way...I powered down the window and when it was just about down...THUMP!!! The window hit the speaker! I had to go back in and put spacers in the btwn the speaker and door...problem solved.
