View Full Version : Multiple sensors to a single gauge? Can it be done?

I really want 3 SPA gauges, but my overhead console only has room for 2. Has anyone run multiple sensors to the same gauge and switch back and forth? I want to be able to check my Oil temp and Transmission temp, but want Oil pressure too. Any experience, ideas or other input would be appreciated.

I've done it with a switch in there to swap between em.

Tranny temp and a oil temp was my application.

As long as it is simmilar temp ranges and senders you will be golden.

I've got 3 temp senders (engine, tranny and diff) switched to one SPA gauge, works fine.

There are 3 wires to each sender, positive, GND and signal, so I used a rotary switch and switched all 3 at the same time. It might be possible to leave the positive and gnd "on" to both senders and merely switch the signal, but I didn't experiment.

Steve,
You are my Hero! :D That is exactly what I want to do! Do you have a part number for the switch? Where did you mount the switch? Also, where did you get your extra sensors?
Thanks,
Chris

Chris,

Unfortunately, here's the part where the cape falls off. ;) I bought the senders directly from SPA, pretty cheap but make sure they come with the pins and connector to plug into.

The rotary switch I purchased from a surplus elect. store locally, no PN on it. You should be able to find what you need online at mouser, digikey, allied, etc. Just look for a 3 position or greater 3 wafer switch.

Where did you mount your switch?
How long did it take to get the sensors from England? Did you call to get the other side of the connectors?

I emailed SPA in the US. I asked about getting some connetors and switching between probes. In his first email, the guy said people do it all the time, but it will void your warranty! I responded that I knew that and that is why I wanted to build a switching box with the proper connectors. Also, if people do it all of the time, then why not offer it as an accessory. His response was Never. I figure they could sell a 3 or 4 sensor switchbox with leads and sensors for a pretty good price. The won't loose money anyway. I am looking for a source for the connectors now. If I find one, I'll post. If I don't then I will just cut those little suckers off and wire it up.

Hey John, got a new product for you! :D

Chris,
No problem. Check out www.westach.com (http://www.westach.com) They make gauges and switches for the aviation industry. They have the switch you are seeking.
