I like the idea of using H2 rims for budget reasons. I am planning on leveling the front end with new torsion bar keys. Supposenly the Green Key is the same as the Hill leveling kit but alot cheaper.

My question is, with the truck sitting level (figure about 2" up front) what is the largest size tires on the H2 rims with NO rubbing problems?

I know the stock H2 tires are the BFG 315/70/17. Any other tires you think would fit better?

How will the ride quaility be affected with the keys and tire/wheel combo? The truck has 12k miles and on some freeways it does the anoying pogo stick bounce. Would new shocks really fix this?

Do some H2 wheels come chrome from the factory or are all chrome H2 wheels done aftermarket?

I am currious as to how the silver H2 wheels look with the chrome PYO center caps. From some pictures it seems the silver H2 wheels might go good with the Pewter color.

Thanks for the help

I'm running H2 Chrome/PYO Centercaps, 33x12.50x17 ProComp AT's with only cranked bars. Perfect fit.

These wheels are like they were made just for these trucks as far as fit and looks go IMHO.

I don't believe a factory Chrome H2 wheel exists. They are factory take-offs that are painstakenly sanded and polished to remove the original rough cast look and then sent out to chrome platers. That's why the steep markup. Also you usually get aftermarket chrome caps that don't have the molded in "HUMMER" logo.

Non chrome goes for about $250 a set of four. Awesome deal. Chromed go for $700-up a set. I believe they are rated over 2500lbs because the H2 rear axle is 5000lbs.

Ride is rougher especially the rear. Might be looking at better shocks.

Sandaholic,
Can't comment on anything but the shock question. Good shocks will fix the pogo stick bounce. That is really about all good shocks can do, control the wheel bounce through compression and rebound dampning. They cannot soften the ride etc.. Thats springs, but GOOD shocks can definately eliminate that "bouncy, bouncy" feeling

What qualifies as a "good" shock?

Hoot,
If it were a motorcyle, and it ain't I'd say a Penske. If it was a sports car, and it ain't I'd say Bilstein or Koni. My knowledge of truck shocks is considerably more limited, but apparently Rancho works well.
From road racing motorcycles and cars my experience is that properly valved shocks can make a huge difference. It's just the way I use my truck and what I expect from a truck for me stock has so far been OK. When My front shocks go I'll be looking for shocks that are more heavily dampned particularly in rebound than the stock ones. Stock shocks and stock speakers are similar in that they are just fine for probably 90% of the people out there. When you finally replace either one with a quality aftermarket item you won't believe the difference.

i put bilsteins on my 2001 after 35k miles and drove it another 20k before trading it in for the 2003.

driving the 2003 back from the dealer with the stock shocks was a rude awakening. it floated and bounced all the way home. i went back and swapped the old bilsteins off the 2001 with the brand new stockers and it made all the difference in the world.

never tried ranchos though.

hey a64pilot, what and where do you roadrace? i race with wera on an r6 and f3 (my vintage bike if you can believe that already). both of them as well as my r1 streetbike are penske-equipped.

Matt,
I used to race my little Girl Scout (GS 500) in WERA clubman. Roebling road (Savannah) was my favorite track. Raced road Atlanta, when gravity cavity was still there, little Talledega etc. Raced Vintage once. Haven't raced since the belly retaining pan rule came out. Now that I'm retired from military and home more often I've been comtemplating it again. I need a buddy to travel with though. I fell at Little Tallegeda in Feb. 98, broke my collar bone and was by myself. I won't do that again.

I am looking a the hummer wheels as well, there is another post by Elowe65 putting on the 315/70 hummer tires and had eliminated the rubbing with only cranking T-bars.

I went with the Rancho RS9000X shocks, 9 pos adjustable. The stock shocks are crap from day one. Others have gone with the bilsteins and seemed pleased as well.

Thanks for all the sugestions. It seems the only 2 tires for my application is the 33x12.50x17 ProComp AT's, and 315/70/17 BFG All Terrain TA KO. Both tires are D load rated. The down side to the ProComps are the Outlined Raised White Letters and the price is higher.

Has anyone used the full H2 setup (H2 tires(BFG) and wheels) on the HD 4x4 with leveling keys?

thanks for the reply. get yourself back out there and have some fun even if its just trackdays. roebling is a great track. home track here is putnam park, very similar layout.

i quit when the belly pan rule hit too, but started again last year with the r6 and added the oil catching lower to the f3 last weekend at grattan.

Sandaholic,

You can put the ProComps on with the raised white letters facing in.

Sandaholic,
BFG's also come in a 285/70/17 which would fit better than the 315's.

Sandaholic,

If you want to meet up at Irwindale Dragstrip one Thursday night, I'll let you take a spin in my truck. I don't have the H2's on anymore but the tire is the same. Like I mentioned in the email, I barely have rubbing problems now even with the m/ts having less back spacing. Most, if not all the problem is in reverse (when turning). Unfortunately this Thursday (5/29) is out of the question as I'm leaving for a business trip on Tuesday. Let me know.
