View Full Version : EGT gauge installation
I have the 1/4 npt tap, to tap the exhaust manifold, but the base or shank is to large for the tap wrench that I have. Can anyone tell me what type wrench that they use?
I used this kind... but for 3/8

It can be done with a wrench.
That's pretty much the same as the one that I used until I got the tap started strait. Then I switched over to a 1/4" ratchet, some extensions and the appropriate sized socket. You just have to back the tap out often when using the socket to clear the chips. Also you have to be careful not to twist the tap at a weird angle, as you're using a longer lever in the ratchet and extensions, so you don't break it off.

And dont forget to have the engine running so the exaust pressure blows the loose chips back out the hole. (and into your face :( )

Why does everyone drill the hole in the side? Would it not be better to have the hole at the bottom? I was just thinking of the tip melting or eating away and the chips falling out. Any Ideas on that?

Burner,
My thoughts exactly! That's how I installed mine. :D
Thanks Hoot,
That's the type wrench that I have but the 1/4 tap won't fit. I can't seem to find a larger wrench that will work.
I thought about trying a socket wrench, but worry that I might not be able to get the tap to go in straight.
Thanks again,
