Well with alot of help of someone that is quite a bit sharper than I with electrical stuff I think I might have come up with a way to remove my key from the IGN and leave the vehical running. This will allow me hopefully to push a button and take my key out so I can leave my truck idleing without fear of someone yanking my truck.

I have a handy diagram but cant figure out how to upload it. :( Any one know of anything strange about a new Duramax that would cause this to make my truck FUBAR?

Here is what he sujested. I have a diagram but dont know how to show it?
You will have to have an SPDT relay on all 3 of your ignition wires, 2 acc wires, and one on the starter wire.

Your run all your stuff above through the normall closed legs of the relay, 30 and 87a with truck side, not the key side ends going to 30. You run a fused 30 amp 12v source to each relays 87 terminal except for the starter relay. Then use a normally open switch to send a ground to the relays coils, terminal 86. Run a jumper from all the terminal 85's to the 30 amp +12 volt on terminal 87.

Umm, what this will do is when you push the button, your connection will break from the switch and have everything feed off of the fused 12 volt source and break the connection of your starter wire so you cannot crank it while the button is pressed. Then you can put your key back in and turn it to run and push the button and everythign will be normal again.

Any thoughts would be great. Anything I am missing? Now i just gota find a wiring diagram for an 03 duramax.

lover of rats:

are you familiar with normally open (n.o.) and normally closed (n.c.) contacts?

do you know what spdt means?

if so you can do this

if not, we'll help you thru terminology and hook-up

Have you thought about adding a turbo-timer. I have been using one that allows me to pull my key and it will run for however long I tell it to, or if I program it it will run however long it thinks it needs to.

A turbo timer.....that might be cool. Can you stick your key back in there and take off again or do you have to shut it down and restart? How much did it cost you if you dont mind me asking? Did it just involve a temp sensor somewere and some misc ignition wiring? Does it have a display and were does it mount? Or is there a link on the net somewere that would explain all this? Thanks

I am fairly deccent with wiring. I planned on T-ing onto the ign wire and the acc wires and having the relays normaly off. Have a switch that is normaly off and when you wanted to yank the ket you flip the switch and feed into the T and yank the key. So you could basicly rung your ign anytime without the key. He said that what he was recomending was a better aproach. I know just enough to get myself in trouble and he is quite a bit smarter with car electricals than I am.

I just didnt know if there was anything funky with the 2003 duramax that I needed to be aware of. Thanks guys.

Also the turbo timers arnt as critical in our applicaton since the turbo dosnt get as hot as some cars and such righ? Since we have a water cooled turbo we have less to worry about heat soak into the tubo/cooking the oil right? Hence why synthetic isnt as neccisary in our application?

I do agree that it definatly cant hurt and now the turbo timer idea is sounding tasty especially if I can stick my key back in there and take off without having to restart it.

Thanks for all the input guys smile.gif

I installed a Viper 150ESP remote starter on my 2003 D-Max 3500. I used the optional start button installed in the dash to activate the remote start take over which allows me to remove the kay and keep the engine running. It will run for the pre programmed time ( I set mine @ 20 minutes) or i can shut it down from the Key fob which also doubles as the keyless entry and remote starter. I use the aux button on the key fob to activate the fast idle circuit in the truck

By the way the 2003 trucks use a data bus wiring system as well as the passlock key security system. The truck has to see a key in the ignition to keep the fuel system operating. If it doesn't "see" a key in the ignition it will turn off fuel and secure the vehicle. Just keeping the ignition/accessory circuits powered up won't keep your truck running so you can remove the key! You have to add a vehicle Imobilizer interface to "fool" the computer into thinking a key IS in the ignition! IF you have no prior experience in doing this kind of work DON'T EXPERIMENT! A multimeter and knowlege of data buss and passlock systems is necessary! If you don't understand them a tow truck, and expensive repairs as well as computers WILL RESULT! I have been installing remote starts for over 15 years and they still can be a pain in the butt!

PS there is a timer built in that will automatically start vehicle every 3 hours and run it for the pre programmed time (up to 60 min) for up to 6 start cycles. An optional timer will start your truck every morning for you at 6 am too if you like!

Doug, thanks for the insight.

One that will start at a specific time? That sounds pretty interesting. I knew they had ones that would start for specific cyles and keep a certian temp in the motor and all that. Maybe I will just look for a remote start. I really didnt want to drop that kind of jack for something that would basicly just be a cool feature. The more I have been looking into this a turbo time seemed like a good alternative. I have found one that is basicly plug and play and would allow me to remove my key and all that and its easily switchable for cooldown time. Its 260$ though  I could get a remote start for close to that.

If I can find a remote start that is easy to change the run down time on I might end up going with that......one of these days I will figure out what I want
