View Full Version : Snow Plowing with Crew Cab

I talked to the dealer and they told me that GM does not offer a plow prep package for the Crew cab diesels.
I was going to put a plow on my truck to do our lot here at work and not sure if this would hurt it or not?

If you have one, could you please let me know how it works, and if I need to do anything else to my truck?

Any suggestions on what plow to use? I was looking at a Western Plow?

Thanks!

Check out the 'why do GM and Boss not recommend' thread here in the accessories, there are quite a number of guys out there running plows, with little if any 'upgrades' to their truck. Check it out though, I'm sure they'll hit this up soon, but there is some additional info in that thread that'll help.

Enjoy!

Becareful if you put a plow on. I wanted a crew cab when i bought and they said if i put a plow on, warranty would be null and void. So i opted for the ext-cab so i had warranty. Later Jeremy

I'm not sure of any warranty issues from the dealer (trucks will all be doing the same thing, regardless of cab configuration) I do know that Fisher will not warranty certain blade sizes on certain cab/motor configurations, due to a weight issue. I have an 8`6" EZV on a crew dually DMAX and have no problems. I would put on a set of Timbrens regardless of what blade you go with. Keep in mind that Fisher and Western are affiliated with eachother through Douglas Dynamics so I'm pretty sure there would be a warranty issue with Western as well. I work for a GM supplier Which is also a Fisher/Western distributor and Fisher won't even warranty my blade. My personal recommendation for your truck would be an 8' Fisher, mount stays up a liitle higher than the new Westerns so you are less likely to hit the pavement with the plow mount when coming upon driveway aprons or even hitting the pavement with the blade raised when the truck encounters some bumps in the road. Good luck, let me know if you have any other questions.

No doubt you can put a plow on a crew but Gm does not offer plow prep on crews. I would check with your individual dealer or service manager first. I would also say that the Western Proplow(4 trip springs 71/2 or 8 ft) is a great plow but the Ultramount from Western hangs a wee bit low. But mounts so easy and clean. I know because I have one. The fisher is a little little bit higher. Either way lots of guys in Pa here are runnning crews. Not me-X cab Diesel. I just can't see getting it turned around if you do residentials. For long straight pushes in commercial lots with very little backdragging its fine. Otherwise way too long to K turn with especially with the plow on-YIKES!!!

I've been plowing with my crew cab/long bed for 2 years now with no problems. Dealer told me they wouldn't cover anything dealing with the front suspension if I put a plow on. Out of warranty now anyway, but everything looks OK so far.
I saw a crew cab/long bed 2500HD with the 6.0L gas engine tonight on a dealer lot with a plow package on it, so I guess GM is not worried about the length of the frame, but the extra weight of the diesel engine.
I'm about 400 lbs over front axle rating with my plow on (with about 600 lbs ballast). Not worried about it.

I have a c/c and Western Pro plow. Pushes snow all day long with outa wimper. I have thought of adding Timbrens but havent done it yet, just to help it carry the load.

Thanks for all of the input. I will probably put a plow on soon. I have a friend that just started selling Western plows, I will see if he has any thoughts too.

I do have a question though, What are "TIMBRENS"? What do they do?

Again, I just want to plow our lot here at work and maybe a few driveways... smile.gif

Timbrens are load assists they are made of solid rubber and are designed to take the load off the front or rear end. Since chevy/gmc have independent front suspensions they dont like the extra weight of a snowplow. Timbrens are very easy to install and are pretty much a must have with an IFS. Go with the Fisher plow. Good luck.

Where can I purchase these Timbrens? The dealer?
Thanks!

The only place I know of on the east coast is Dejana (www.dejana.com) I'm sure there are other places. If you go with Dejana and they won't ship em to you, let me know, I can pick them up and send them to you.

Local speed skops or good parts places should be able to get Timbrens. Also check with ant places that sell plows.
I have a 8 1/2 Western on my CC/Dually. I figure that the front axle is overloaded some but how often do I actually drive around with the plow on and lifted? My wife can pop the plow off in 1 minute so on and off is no big deal.
The Western recievers do hang a little low but 1 pin takes them off then there's almost nothing hanging down. I think the permanent brackets are higher than the bottom of the airdam.

Here is the dealer that I bought a set of Timbrens. Very nice and good person to deal with. Several other snowplowers have purchased a set from him without a problem.
