Hi Guys I am looking at purchasing a 36 foot car trailer and want to go with a Goose Neck set up. I have a 2001 extended cab HD Short Bed, and I guess the short bed is the problem. From what I have been able to find out the trailer needs to have an extended hitch so it dose not hit the cab when turning tight or backing. Dose anyone make a hitch to solve this problem if the trailer dose not have the extended hitch? Or can you lengthen the goose neck on the trailer to compensate for the short bed? Hitch extender ? Let me know if has found good solution to this problem. THX Bud

Bud,

You can have the gooseneck custom built to your specs. I pull a 36' gooseneck carhauler with my shortbed and have no problems whatsoever.

I would suggest having the upper (gooseneck) deck built to 5' instead of the standard 8' this will have the hitch extended 36" in front of the body and allow you to cut over 90

Definitely what Steve said. It would be really nice to have a full overhead, but with a short bed it isn't worth the risk!

Not quite the same as a goose-neck, but I pull my 102" wide 5th-wheel trailer with a 12" extended pin box. Hitch is installed per manufacturer's instructions and I can turn greater than 90

You can look at a gooseneck extender at popuphitch.com.

Thanks for the replies, I did look at the hitch extender at Pop Up Hitch and called them on it. Only to find out it only fits a round tube gooseneck; and the used trailer I am looking at buying is a square, it seems like a great idea.

That is one AWESOME looking trailer Steve has, I am sure that is way out of my price range, but would love to have anyway. Very nice job on the conversion. THX Bud

Bud,

I have a 102" wide Featherlite car hauler I pull with my X-cab shorty. No problems, it has a 6' nose which is almost a full overhead. Model is 4941, it was designed for a Ford Superduty Short bed dually. My sales guy got all the drawings to show me before I ordered it. I have a B&W turnoverball hitch. If I remember, 80 degrees was the max turning radius but my hitch is 1" farther back than the Ford's. I have been in some very tight places and not had any problems just keep an eye on it ;) My tightest radius I ever did the trailer was about 8" away from the back window (backing in a driveway with 2 big trees on both sides on a 15' wide road with lots of trees on both sides of it) took a couple tries :D
