View Full Version : replacement cables are NOT STAINLESS STEEL
I just had my tail gate cables replaced as per the recall notice, SOOO I decided to do a magnet test to see if infact the cables were stainless steel, NOOO just regular steel cables.
What did you get???????
I have a call into the service manager to see whats happening.

mdrag,
I am thoroughly impressed with the vast amount of data you have at your fingertips.
Please keep it up, I need to learn new things every day.
Thanks, Don

If a cable was supposed to be stainless STEEL, I'd be worried if a magnet WOULDN't stick to it. Virtually all stainless that can be pulled into wire exhibits magnetic permeability (A magnet sticks to it), at least after the cold working required to make wire out of it.
If it wasn't magnetic you'd really have to wonder what it was . . .Aluminum?

to the individual that thinks all quality stainless has magnetic properties.
ALL MARINE RIGGING IS STAINLESS STEEL AND NON OF IT HAS ANY METAL PROPERTIES IN IT TO RUST.
If you should happen to bolt aluminium to stainless steel then the aluminium will oxidize, (dissimilar metals) much like the oxidizing magnezium transfer case with steel bolts used in our 4x4 duramaxes, but then you new that didnt you???? Oh well.
good luck
IT IS NICE THAT GENERAL MOTORS IS REPLACING A SCREW-UP OF THEIRS WITH PARTS MADE IN CHINA. LOOK AT YOUR TAGS ON YOUR NEW CABLES!!!!!!!
