View Full Version : My Horn Sucks

My horn couldn't make a yugo get out of my way.
Who has upgraded the horn and to what?
I was thinking of a 70's Caddy horn, or maybe something REALLY loud. :D
Thanks
Trent
Horns aren't intended to get anyone "out of your way". In fact, in most states, its illegal (can be construed as road rage).
I would imagine that any horn would work, its just a matter of getting the connection right.

That right there is a mind boggling statement, and a clear example of how differently folks from different parts of this country think.
Mom's '76 Cadillac Seville had one heck of a horn, with a 3rd note that kicked in after 1/2 second . . .so you could toot politely or HONK.
FWIW my 2004 Suburban has a better sounding and distictly louder horn than my 2002 Sierra did. I don't know why.
If you want to get noticed I would suggest air horns. You can pick a comlpete set form a JC Whitnet catalog for a little over $200. Have them on both my trucks and they for sure dont go unnoticed.

Anyone who thinks the horn should not be used should move to the mountains and let drunks drive in both lanes at 15 mph. They also pull out infront of you with out warning.
I would rather not go with an air horn.

How about go to a wrecking yard and get another set of horns to install on the opposite side of the truck. Wire it in with a relay and get twice the tone you have now. Cheap, uncomplicated and it won't suck, it'll just blow.... :D
JP
This has nothing to do with the way I "think", its the law...
Not one, but two drunks (at least) in both lanes, sequentially driving at 15mph....
Nice fairy tale.
Last time I was behind a drunk, I simply called the police, as I was driving, and literally 3 miles down the road they were pulled over.
Civilization has its privileges.
TSimpler,
GRIOT'S GARAGE (http://www.griotsgarage.com) has two louder horns listed on their website, they may be worth a look. Use the search feature and 'horn'.
All,
I never imagined that the proper use of horns could stir such strong feelings.... Please keep it civil.

Please be so kind as to tell me what cell phone will work here in the mountains.
Thank you kind sir.
Trent
I'm done playing special olympics with you, but I think its sad that I said all that to you about your story and all you took away from it was cell phone reception.......
Wow.
I use a Grover truck air horn, you will need a compressor and tank for air, but it will do the job. It'll blow the Yugo completely off the road! :D Just kidding, but it is loud and will get anyones attention. ;)

Where does someone get such a thing, and how well would it fit (I off road every day just to get home). :D

I'll try to remember the next time I'm in MA visiting my sister not to use the horn so I won't provoke anyone. The last time I was there a distingusihed lady in a white Volvo SUV pulled onto 2A from a driveway so close infront of my 2500HD that I left skidmarks even with the ABS right up to the location where we determined that my front bumper was more rigid than her hatch. . .but I was too stunned to honk at her. Thank goodness, I might have gotten a ticket had a been able to anticipate her fearlessness.
Neither of us got a ticket, which still has me scratching my head . . . maybe the officer thought, since I didn't have any damage, I'd rather avoid the possibility of needing to testify if she contested it.
No need for a ticket. Mass law says you must maintain control of your vehicle at all times. You were automatically at fault.
Must be a whole lot of outlaws on this board.
There is a whole division of State Police assigned to patrol the highways for road rage cases. Anything from laying on the horn to giving someone the bird is subject to having your license removed on the spot and being arrested.
Next time either of you are in Mass, I highly recommend you try it out......

I guess that's why I didn't get a ticket . . . didn't loose control of the vehicle, just no place for me to go but where she was after she drove out in front of me.
Have you never seen ABS skids? Nice light grey dashes, very closely spaced.
In Colorado pulling out from a driveway in a manner that causes an approaching driver to use his or her brakes (at all!) is "Failure to yield". Apparently in MA pulling out so close in front of someone that they have no alternative to colliding with you is not ticketable. I don't know if  or  is the more appropriate response.
My general observation from my tour of the country this summer was that the most honking occurs in NYC, but the place where someone was most likely to drive right out in front of you, change lanes without looking or completely ignore a red traffic signal was Massachusetts . . . It's only fair to mention that HDV-rod lives closer to Providence, RI than to Boston, in a corner of MA where I haven't been. But "inside" (east of) I-495, and particularly inside Hwy 128, the driving is very agressive. I had about as many  moments in a week in MA as in all the other driving I've done in the last 5 years, (and my first actual bump with another vehicle since I was rear ended by a drunk more than 10 years ago.)
I work in Natick, which is near Boston. 40+ mile commute each way. I use Rt 24 and Rt 128 on a daily basis.
You're at fault if you rear end someone in the state of Massachusetts. You're supposed to be able to stop no matter what. It's the law.
As for changing lanes, we look, we just don't care. If there is enough space for a car to fit in, we use it.
I find that most foreigners seem to have a hard time driving in the state. Funny part is, with as much traveling as I do all over the country, I have no problem driving where ever I go. Not only do we have the best educational facilities in the counrty, but also the best driver ed course around. :D

I started this topic with the simple idea to improve my horn. Nobody goes nuts when someone wants more power or bigger tires, which are a bigger danger to others than a horn. I did not start this topic to start another war.
HDV-rod,
For your information I am not "some hick" I am a Honorably Discharged disabled Vet who I is putting himself through Engineering School on the GI Bill. I didn't ask for your negitive imput and would like you to keep your comments to your self.
Now, once again. I am looking to improve my horn. Any HELPFUL imput would be nice.
Thanks Mdrag I might go that route, but am still open for imput.
Thanks
Trent
Anyone who wants to move "drunks" off the road with a horn is a hick.
I commend you for your service to our country and for your desire for higher education.
I work at the Natick Soldier System Center where things such as MRE's, flack jackets, helmets, chem protective gear and camouflage are designed, among other things.
None of that changes my responses.
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
HDV-Rod,
I suggest that you review The Diesel Page Forum Membership Agreement (http://forum.thedieselpage.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=agree) that you agreed to when you joined TDP Forums. You may have to log out to do so.
Pay special attention to this passage:
"You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this BB to post any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or violates any other law."
Personal attacks and derogatory name calling are a clear violation of the Membership Agreement. I also asked to keep it civil in my post of 11/11/04. If you can't or won't comply with the Membership Agreement, contact More Power for a refund.
...Last time I was behind a drunk, I simply called the police, as I was driving...
...As for changing lanes, we look, we just don't care. If there is enough space for a car to fit in, we use it...
I'd suggest taking advantage of the "...best educational facilities in the counrty, but also the best driver ed course around" to correct these unsafe driving habits.

A 'foreigner' from Oklahoma
I'll pass on the review, thanks. The forum I moderate has the same drool on its front page, but I seem to be able to allow for some personalities. Then again, the site I moderate on has more than a post a month (at least untill I showed up here).
Refund? For what, I paid for nothing.
My insurance step is a 9, the lowest it can be. I've never been in an accident, or even had a ticket for about 5 years. I am also well aware of the rules of the road, however, that and 35 cents will get you a phone call out here. When in Rome....... you know the rest.
If you want to throw me out for calling someone a hick, please, by all means do so. I had no idea we were all supposed to be wearing skirts here....
And again, a happy Thanksgiving to all.
TSimpler,
In my experience, Griot's offers quality products with great customer service. I've not tried their horns, but I would expect them to work as advertised. Good luck.

These trucks go so fast, maybe were just outrunning the sound waves. Like Mach 1.
Everyone have a Happy Thanksgiving!

I too am looking for a set of horns. For two years I have had a set up that was bought at some auto parts store in NJ that has three air trumpets, $60. I love the horn and I make lots of "respectable yet safe" fun. Mostly embarrass the nieces when I visit them at their school and select the "Turkey" call.
Then one day I visited one of our members on the "Page" that has a set of train horns and now "I GOTTA Have One!"
Guess that makes me a Hick too; but hea, that

While installing a new horn I found that one of mine was dead. It was full of mud, can't imagine how that happened.
I ordered the Griots horn but will return it; its too high pitched. I am looking for a low tone.
There are no rivers in NM to filter anything. The only thing we have it the Rio Creek (Grande)
