I need some input on tires. I get into mud, clay and sand. I do more highway than off road, so how would you go about looking for a tire? What type of tire does everyone else use when it comes to this. I'm also going up in size to 285/75/16 with WELD wheels(16x8). I'm also doing a leveling kit from fabtech. I'm looking at PRO-COMP radial all-terrain, and GOODYEAR mt/r. Does anyone have them and what do they think of them? Any input would be great!

buelldude,

I have been looking at tires for months. Hard to buy new ones when I only have 15,000 miles on these. I plan on ordering some Yokahama Geolander AT+II tomorrow. I have looked at all of them and dicided that I will try the 285s also. I don't need a mud tread since most of my miles are on the highway. And the time spent off road is usually in my jeep. I looked at the NITTO tires and they look good also. I can however get the Yokahams for about $150 less.

I have BFG all-terrain KO's on my HD, I live in a snowy region and they are excellent in snow. They are made to be aired down and run in sand or mud. They have large side wall/shoulder blocks that dig well when run aired down. In heavy/sticky clay they don't clean out as well as a mud terrain tire, but if rotated I have gotten 50K plus out of them.

A friend has MT/Rs on his half ton and likes them. They look really cool and wear well for a mud tire. He is figuring that he will get at least 35K out of them. But they are kinda noisy on the road.

Hope that helps.

thanks for the input, I went to tire rack and looked up some prices and tires are going from 120 to 180 each. I also looked at some DUNLOPS, look good but I haven't seen anybody with them on???

I ordered the trXus 255/85/16 heared alot of good things (quiet smmoth highway ride, long wearing, great snow mud tire too, and looks :D . Somebody didn't like the nittos off road, do a search on "nitto" and or "trxus" tries and read what others are saying

I've also got the 255/85 TrXus MT's. Been very happy so far. Definetly louder than the stock firestones, but not nearly as loud as most mud tires. Most pronounced between 40-50 MPH, above that engine noise is all I hear. I don't do much "serious" off-roading, but I almost got stuck several times at my lease in areas I never had problems with in my previous truck, a '97 Z71. I believe it was a combination of a much heavier truck and the factory slicks. I'm lucky enough to live about 45 minutes from Interco's headquarters, so I got the tires for $119 each, including mount and balance.

REC06,
When you get your tires, be sure the shop that mounts them uses a Hunter GSP 9700 tire balancer. Mine took alot of weight, but not a bit of vibration on the interstate. Look here to find a machine in your area: http://www.gsp9700.com

I too have been looking at tires a lot. I also like the YOKO Geo's.

The TrXXus look neat but I've run a lot of Swampers and they are usually real soft compound.

Michelin just introduced a 285 in the LTX/MS but I can't find them anywhere and Michelin can't tell me when they will show up in the southeast.

Swla,
Thnaks for the headsup, I look into that for sure. I wanted those 285 trxus with the 3700 lb rating but cant afford rims right now and I haul pretty stout load with plow and didn't trust them on a 6.5 rim.

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

Got off my butt this am after my last post and drove over to Daytona and bought me a set of Yokohama Geolanger AT+2 size 285's.

They seem about the same in sound to the BFG I had but the ride is much smoother.

If you have read some of my other posts on tires- I hated the BFG's. I had no less than 14 of them on my truck in 2 days and the dealer could not get the vibration out.

I should have never kept them.

The Yoko installer said they had also seen a bad batch of the BFG's late last year.

MUCH happier now !!!

GMC-2002-DMAX

Great pics!

Where's the plastic thingie that says 6.6 Duramax on it?

I posted earlier about it and someone told me it was a resonator for the intake.

I want to take it off and plug the hole into the air intake somehow.

How did you plug yours. Or have you eliminated it with an aftermarket something?

On closer inspection of the picture that isn't even a Duramax engine is it?

TraceF,

2001's have silver lettering on the intake plastic thingy

2002's have no silver print.

Anyway, yes it is a Duramax, I know because the Juice works and they don't make 'em for gassers.

I will post some better PICS when we get some better weather. Those are old, like last winter old.

Trace and GMC-2002-Dmax, did you do anything to make tires fit. Like crank up torsion bars? I carry alot of stuff in my truck on a daily basis. The front is already level w/ the back. How good are they in snow?

Also,Did you sell the stock aluminum wheels and tires? How much did you get?

wild bore,

I used about a dozen black zip ties to tie back the wheel wells in the front and the back. They barely rubbbed before I did it and they don't rub at all now. :D

I did not sell the stock PYO aluminum rims. I will put them back on in late March for the summer. I had wanted larger tires for the stock rims but got a deal from the PEND from the diesel page on the 8" wide rims and Yoko tires.

If you tie the wheel well back my best advice is to see where they rub, that's what I did

IMHO They are awesome in the rain and the snow .

I have only seen snow twice in my life tongue.gif and want to keep it that way.

I took the truck to the dealer and had them crank the torsion bars and align (necessary) it soon after I got it. Mine is not quite level, still a little lower in front.

The LF tire rubbed the front plastic fender liner, more like GRABBED it in reverse on a sharp turn so I took a razor knife and cut about the bottom 4" off it.

Be careful not to cut too deep or hard, your windshield washer bottle is behind it. I also had to trim the plastic thingie under the front bumper but I just cut it on an angle from the rear edge of the bumper downward to about 1" from the rear edge of the plastic at the bottom and you can't really even tell.

I drove the tires the first time in the rain yesterday and they grip very well. I tried to break them loose leaving corners on right hand turns, etc. I could do it but I had to put my foot in it.

I am very happy with the Geo's.

:D

I think that the "new" interco tire is steel belted x 10 with harder rubber. One of the fellas told me that he was given a 50k warranty on the tread. Warranty and price would lean me in their direction.

On the rims...... I have five extra (ALCOA) rims. I wounder what they would bring?

does anyone else run these tires(trXus)? I looked at them last night and was wondering how they last on the road.

I've ran 3 sets of 285 trxus on the factory pyo wheels. They last pretty well on my 454 truck and on the front of my duramax but they are fairly soft and they chew off the back in about 6k with a aggressive driving and towing style driving. The longest lasting tire I have found bar none is the swamper ssr, it wears like iron, on the back of my duramax I have 6k miles and they are just starting to show wear. They are however not quite as good to drive in wet or slick conditions but overall they are still not bad. Also if you consider this tire in the same 285 size it is about an inch taller than most other tires so it's very close on the front.
