New to diesels, where to get basic info?

I just bought my first diesel truck (duramax of course) And I don't have much diesel knowledge. I am just wondering were to get basic information on principles of operation, direct vs indirect injection, etc. Also was wondering if it is bad to idle for long periods of time. Is that why you would want to increase the idle speed? What actually happens to the engine if it idles too long?

Welcome, you've come to the right place to get all those questions answered. There is an amazing amount of expertise here. Most of my knowlege, and it wasn't much, came from small marine diesels. I've learned a whole bunch more since joining the page and learning more everyday.
