Does anybody have info on what diesel is going into the Jeep Liberty late this year?? And do you think that Edge will produce a box for it?? or any aftermarket manufacturer for that matter. It may be a nice truck for the little lady. I heard it will only be around 130hp and 300lb/ft of torque, from a Jeep rep at the auto show. If anybody knows where I could find info I'd appreciate it. I like reading about upcoming diesel powered vehicles.

No problem. I'm looking at getting one after they come out.

"Only" 130HP & 300lb-ft? That sounds like an awful lot for such a small, light vehicle...but I guess that's the trend these days. I'm sure not very comfortable with all the foolish 16-25 year old "kids" on the road, driving cars with excessive power and without the sense or experience to handle them on anything but dry pavement!

I've read in one of the Auto mags that Ford is planning on making a diesel available in the Explorer later on this or next year...anyone else heard this?

If anyone has some information about the engine that eventually ends up in this thing I would be curious. The Italian diesel didn't meet emission standards accorrding to an article in Autonews. I was told last month that we Canucks will have to wait until 2005 as well. Some people don't like the Liberty design. I know I didn't when I first saw them but they do tend to grow on you after awhile. I am willing to wait for a diesel powered mini SUV. Chevy wake up! Get another diesel powered vehicle on the go!

I want that 3cyl VW diesel that gets 90MPG seen over at that vwvortex page....I drive 120 miles round trip to work and that would be awesome! Our current 02' civic gets 42MPG solid but 90 would be great!

Sounds like overseas it is out already. A 2.5 liter common rail diesel.

Here is a thread on the diesel Liberty.

"I've just bought a new Cherokee (that's the Liberty here in Australia, as Subaru have a Liberty) Sport 2.5litre turbo diesel manual. Done 3000km at 10.15 litres/100km which is about 23.5 miles per US gal (29.5 per UK gal) - includes town, open road, and rough track and low range driving. Diesel filler will not take truck fill nozzles, only the smaller ones.

Great car! All my previous off-road driving has been in 'Cruisers on pipeline construction spreads, and I was impressed with the capability of the Jeep straight off the showroom floor."

"A Liberty with what promises to be a more powerful and sophisticated diesel engine will go on sale in the United States next year as a 2005 model.

The 2.8-liter 4-cylinder diesel Liberty I drove may only produce 148 horsepower, but it packs 266 pound-feet of torque -- nearly as much as the acclaimed 4.2-liter six-cylinder that powers the considerably heavier Chevrolet Trailblazer -- and torque is the number that matters for acceleration and towing.

Even more impressive, the Liberty generates that torque at engine speeds as low as 2,000 r.p.m., making the power available in regular driving, not just during heavy acceleration. "

I just got back from two weeks in the UK and Italy. Diesel Cherokees have been out for a while. Not sure of the engine. I even saw a diesel Dodge Caravan.

It's great to be doing 100 mph and get blown away by a diesel Mercedes. :D :D

It's pretty sad. We rented a new VW minivan to haul tradeshow stuff. Nice van, even had normal extra wide doors in back not sliders. 2.0 liter gas 6 speed at 70-80 mph, good power and still got 35 mpg. My Olds Silhouette gets 24 and isn't that much bigger. Sometimes the US seems so far behind.

The diesel that is currently available in the Liberty, Cherokee & Caravan in Europe is an Italian made VM-Motori diesel.

VM-Motori is co-owned by Detroit Diesel and Roger Penske.

Check it out here: http://www.atlanticdda.com/engines/vm_motori.cfm

I do not know if that will be the engine used in the U.S. version or not.

Jelisfc, Rember the gassers over there use Direct Injection that requires high octane 95+ fuel that our Super will still make the engine ping! Direct injection on a gasser is much the same results as a diesel PSD VS a early 90's 7.3

JRM, 95 was the cheap pump. I believe the high octane was 102. It only cost (the company luckily) $65.00 for 16-18 gallons. Not bad. 19 MPG doing a 100+ in a Jag X type.

I was just at the jeep dealer last week and they said that the diesel will not be available till 2005 model year?? what gives? I drove the gas V-6 version and it is slow!! I could not not drive a 17.5 sec truck. The Dmax ran 16.20's stock, big difference. I hope thay come out sooner. If not for the crazy price I would buy a VW toureg with the V-10 diesel (308hp, 55x lb-ft torque). I haven't been on the jeep websites lately but I'll check them out and see what they have to say.

Hail Diesel Power!! smile.gif

I have read Chrysler has contracted VW for 120,000 TDI Diesel engines annualy. And Rummor has it the Dakota will get a VW engine here in the US. That PT cruiser would be great with a TDI. Beleive me when I tell ya, The Germans got it RIGHT with the TDI !!! Its the car its self thats a little cheesey, but the engine makes up for it.
