There is a fairly interesting article on the future of passenger car diesels in the current issue of Car and Driver. If you don't want to spring for the newstand price, it is online at:

They do mention that the stricter air pollution regs will hit in '09 that will have implications for diesel pickups.
For those of you who can't get too much diesel in your system, there is a discussion board primarily for VW TDI diesel, but there is also a section on "non-TDI" diesels and one on "Biodiesel" at:
