Shortly after we started getting some good solid info on the Duramax here in the DP we heard about the "all new Ford powerstroke" from the blue oval news. That was probably well over a year ago and still the only printed information about the G2 I have read besides forum talk.

Seems like Ford guys dont like disgussing the similarities with the G2 and the Dmax but it seems obvious where they got a good portion of their new design.

So from where I sit it appears that Ford saw the Dmax, slapped one of their own together and promised to begin producing them and thats been the last we heard, although some forum talk Ive seen also leads me to believe that they have posponed the promise of a camless design and are now proposing to use that technology a couple years after the G2s introduction.

Did Ford bite off more than they could chew when they promised their new PSD? Has anyone heard "anything"?

This is my understanding:

The G2 PSD will debut in the 2003 Ford Trucks. It WILL NOT be camless. The camless design is being used first for Class 8 engines, then medium duties and buses, and finally in the PowerStroke and future small diesels. The PSD should be camless around 2007.

Thanks Scott,

Where did you get the '03 introduction from? I recall reading in the BON that they were supposed to be out for the '02 ym.

What similarities are you talking about?
Acording ti IH it has more similarities with the 7.3 than the D-max (iron heads, same fuel injection).

The D-max has more in common with the VW diesel (Aluminum heads, same injection) than it does the PSD.

Where have you read that it will have cast heads instead of aluminum? Its supposed to be a "lightweight, deep skirted, 90 degree block". Thats EXACTLY what the Duramax is...

Did not read it anywhere. Thats what IH said to a group of PSD owners during a resent engine plant tour. I was unable to make that tour due to being a day late. But I did talk to a Ford drivetrain engineer for about an hour.

Well the G2 can't be any good. Lightweight diesel? In a big Ford. Can't be. How are they gonna make it light and powerful?
Sounds just like the Dmax that kicks the big old PSD's butt. Navistar is copying GM/Isuzu's philosophy.

Scar,

How's your propane? I'm getting mine shortly. Juggling around the type of tank I want to go with.

dmax,

The propane is great. Love it. Dynoed at 337hp last week. Hope to get injectors soon so I can keep up (power wise, no problem speed wise) with these newer trucks. I need to get a better tank. The BBQ tank just doesen't last long enough the way I have my system tweeked. For the money you can't beat the Powershot.

It's great turning 337 hp and still getting 20+ MPG. Your not going to belive your driving the same truck. As long as you don't try to feed too much LP you shouldn't have any problems. Have fun and hang on.

As far as the G2 going from 7.3 to 6.0 cuts a bunch of lbs. Deep skirted blocks are used because with thinner lighter castings you need it to support the mains. Nothing new. Been used by many for years. GM did not reinvent the wheel with the Dmax and Ford won't either with the G2. I'll have to wait and see. Same as the Dmax. I think the G2 will have the same problems getting chiped as the Dmax.
I think with emissions getting tighter there is going to be lots of changes in the future for diesels. It would not suprise me to see a cat on the Dmax in the near future. Gm is pushing hard to keep emission standards where they are right now with no help from Ford or DC. Who knows what kind of junk the big three are going to try to sell us 5 years down the road.

After looking at the G2 today it looked as if it might of had the aluminum heads, but not sure. The G2 will start production in 8/02. The current PSD will end shortly after. If this info is wrong then the company is misleading a lot of use employees.
