How much do you think GM's fiasco of making diesels out of 350 gassers contributed to the demise of the Oldsmobile?

Thats just one item in a long list of GM problems. If money is more important than anything else, maybe they should deal in contraband.

It is old news. The problem is that there's not enough differentiation between Pontiac, Buick, Chevrolet and Olds as it is. One of them had to go...

Sorta like Plymouth.

Well, I have a little experience with the Olds 350 diesel--my friend's 1982 Caddy Fleetwood has a 350 diesel & 325K miles. After 1980-81, they weren't bad engines, but people didn't know how to take care of them--ie 15W40 oil rated "CC" or better & changed every 5K or sooner, use good diesel fuel, fuel filter every year, & pay attention to the "water in fuel" light. With proper care, the Olds diesel isn't a bad engine, though a slow one.

I don't believe the diesel situation contributed to olds' demise. In 85, the diesels last year, was around the peak of olds production #'s, something like 900K+ cars built around then. I believe the demise is due to corporate stupidity and not differentiating a chevy from a olds from a buick. Although they have done that now, people have already associated oldsmobiles with old fart cars, even though that's not really the case. I'd like to see Olds saved. Best situation is that sales go up from all the good deals they are making on caes and the economy and car market changes.

Yes, the olds diesel is a good diesel. As for being slow, I'm working on that.... (headers, dual 3" exh, intake mods, etc...)

Heck Gm dumped Buick City in Flint MI, why didn't they drop the Buick. Gm bigwigs said the Olds could not draw in the younger buyers. They sure had them when, they made the W-30,W-31 Cutlass,442 and Hurst Olds. Now there were some real nice cars.
