whats the longevity of a 6.2 diesel like? what problems should i anticipate?

i'm looking to buy an 82 burb (with a 6.2) and i was wondering if anyone could give me a ball park figure on the axle ratio. it shifts from 1st to 2nd at about 25, and from 2nd to 3rd at about 47. is it possible to know the gear ratio from this? i think it had 32" tires. maybe 30".

any help is welcome

First of all, is it a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton? That will make a difference as to what the standard gearing is. I'd have to say that either the gears were changed or smaller tires were put on, though, (maybe both) because a 1-2 shift at 25mph sounds kinda high to me - I remember driving a CUCV Blazer in the army and it shifted to 3rd around 25-30mph.

31" tires are about the largest that will fit in a stock height truck's wheelwells without any rubbing at full compression or full turn. I believe that in 82 the stock tire size for 1/2 tons was 235-75R15 (about 29") and for 3/4 tons 265-75R16 (about 31".)

i'm told it is a half ton. i'm not at all certain about the tire size. 29" sounds right.

did i mention that my acceleration was modest, or even tentative? does that make a difference?

thanks again

i hadn't even considered that the speedometer may not have been calibrated properly.......

I had 36" tires on my non-lifted CUCV... but then again that was with a little help from the disk grinder!! It shifted at the 25-30mph range also with 32" tires a TH400 and 4.56 gears. With 36" tires and a SM465 I shift later.

I don't know about the rest out there, but I just rolled over 304K with only a few controller issues that I fixed by going to a manual glow plug switch. I bought the '83 6.2L Van with 214K and the motor has been trouble free since. I keep hear about injectors, pumps and headgaskets but I went through the maintenance records from the previous owner and thier was nothing done to the motor but normal maintence. I supposed he could have pulled the stuff but I've talked to him since the purchase and everything seems on the up & up. I still pull down 19-22 mpg on the road. The motor is not a speedster but I don't need a hi-po diesel van anyway.

There is no way to "guess" the longevity of any vehicle. I know people that can't get 100K out of a 6.2 (or any engine, for that matter) and some that are still running with no repairs, like mine.

My Blazer has 33/12.50/15 Bridgestone Dueller M/T's on it at stock height and does not rub. The rear end is 4.10 (2 previous rear ends were 3.73, only got 150K out of them). The truck moves pretty good, even towing if around 6K. Fuel milage has never been less than 20 in town/mixed, and as high as 32 on many highway trips. In my opinion, according to my experience with 2 of them, the 6.2 is one of the finest engines ever produced. It does require regular maintenance to make it last. Power won't impress my grandmother, but it is more than sufficient for my needs, and for what it is designed for. When I need to do some serious hauling, I have the Duramax for that. I still have and drive my 6.2. I have yet to find any other vehicle that has a turning radius as narrow as the blazer. Your results may vary.
