Sounds like the marketing folks at Daimler/Chyrsler are staying up nights to hype sales. Their newest spin has the Cummins 5.9 with 305 hp @ 2900 and 555 ft.lb. torque @1400. No mention of what type of rubber band they will use for a tranny yet. The also are introducing the new "hemi 5.7 V-8" with class leading 345 hp. according the the news release.

Sounds like they at least want to have "bragging rights" next year.

Maybe the aftermarket people will have the problems worked out with the modules and the exhaust systems will fit right by then so I won't have to be following too many tail lights.

The 2003 Dodge will have a beefed up auto trans. in the 48RE. This truck is awesome with the 4-door option and the improved, quieter Cummins.

actually same old tranny....

In a slightly disappointing move, Lee informed us that the new Cummins carries over the transmission from the 2002 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty pickups. No mechanical or physical changes were made to it. Instead, the 60hp / 50ft-lbs increase in power and torque, "is handled by beefing up the transmission electronically."

When asked about the possibility of using Allison transmissions we we're told that would not happen.

Dodge won't be using a Mercedes diesel engine anytime soon either. Lee told us that "the matter had been studied (and tabled for now.)" The Cummins relationship means a lot to Dodge and during consumer clinics many Ram Heavy Duty owners told Dodge the reason they buy these trucks is because it has the Cummins name on the side.

Nearly 75% of current Ram Heavy Duty pickups are sold with a Cummins diesel engine option.

Gasoline powered engine owners won't be disappointed either with the new Rams. Dodge is bringing back the HEMI engine as a 5.7-liter V8 with 365ft-lbs of torque at 4,400rpm and 345hp at 5,600rpm. It replaces the old 5.9-liter Magnum V8.

The HEMI derives its name from its hemispherical combustion chambers. This design allows for larger valves per cylinder and greater airflow during combustion, creating about 10% more horsepower and torque than a conventional engine of the same size.

Dodge first produced the HEMI engine from 1951 to 1958, brought it back from 1966 to 1971, where it was best known as the 426 cubic inch powerplant in the Barracuda muscle car, and revives it for a third time with modern engineering and design.

"With its compact size, we could also put this in a car," Lee told us. "But for now it's only an option on the Ram Heavy Duty. The HEMI will not be offered as an engine choice on the light duty 1500 Ram pickup."

Other engine choices for the 2003 Ram HDs include the Standard Output 5.9-liter I6 Cummins Turbo Diesel, also equipped with high pressure common rail injection, and famous Viper derived 8.0-liter V10. The Standard Output Cummins jumps from 235 to 250hp and provides 460 ft-lbs of torque.

"The big news is the introduction of the 48RE automatic that will be available as an option with all the diesels and the V10. Currently, buyers who want the higher output Cummins can only get it with the 6-speed manual. The reason is simple, the current 47RE just can't handle the massive amounts of torque generated by the diesel. To solve this problem Dodge has seriously beefed up the internal components to allow it better manage the torque loads. For the first time the highest output diesel will be available with an automatic. That's the good news, the bad news is that you'll have to wait until January of 2003 to get one."

PUTC has published that the 47RE will carry over to the '03 Dodge HD's. That's why the standard 250HP/460TQ Cummins is being offered.

TRD states that the 47RE will be carrover though they add some additional info that the 48RE will be available mid year.

Details on the 48RE are schetchy. Infomation available now is stating it's nothing more than just just a 47RE with more electronics to control power (torque management).

I'm not dead certain of what we've heard so far. Very probable that we'll obtain more solid information in the days to come.

its hard for me to say this because i'm a dodge guy(well, i'm a cummins guy anyway), but the 03 dodge's suck!!!!!!

first of all, look at them. they went from having the look that everyone ripped off (admit it) to looking like a caricature of itself. when i saw the 02 1500's i thought, "thank god they didn't do that to the 2500/3500's." apperently the couldn't resist. they now look like a steaming pile of dog cr-p.

also, dodge/cummins guys have always been big on aftermarket mods. well to accomodate the tacky new design, all the extra under-hood space was eliminated. this makes it twice as bad: losing valuable space JUST to make a truck look stoopid.

also, as many of you have pionted out, of ALL the things dodge COULD have improved, they chose rework their class leading asthetics rather that reworking their class lagging hunk of pure garbage automatic transmission.

i guess no-one every told D/C's R&D department that fords and chevy's were only better on paper.

consider me an enemy of the "big 3". (at least un till GM pulls its collective head out and puts a dmax in a 'burb

For me the '03 Dodge is more appealing than the '03 Silvalanche. They still need to find a 5sp auto tranny.

Doubt it. The new trucks are American Axles the 01's are Dana's. Totally different axles.

Anything can be done if you really want to do it. Probably easies to by an after market rear disc setup that is designed for th e01.

The new HD's will have the 48RE mid year. They're starting out with the 47RE but they will change out. At that time, you will be able to get the HO option with the auto http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/smile.gif

All of the 2500 and 3500 Rams built late in
2000 (considered 2001.5's) have 4 wheel disc
brakes. Mine has them. It was built in Oct.
2000. Here is an image:
