I just bought one. Runs and works great. I pick it up this Saturday. I'm just gonna use it for playing around the house. Grading, digging, fire wood retrieval, a little clearing.

Anybody familiar with these machines? I'd like to get some pointers on it's capabilties and weaknesses. What to watch for and such.

It's got a 3 cylinder diesel, 2WD. Torque converter. I think it's a 4-speed. Full cab, lights, turn signals and a heater. Paid less than $5000 for it. Needs paint. I'm gonna get some pictures of it on my site in the near future.

Mike,

What model? Is it an actual Backhoe or is it a tractor with a backhoe on the back?

BTW: Some of these guys think I'm an anti Ford guy, Nope.. I grew up working with with Ford tractors.. First tractor I ever drove was a Ford 2000.. All I ever worked with was Ford tractors and New Holland equippment..

Steve,

No it's a real backhoe. It's big. My wife thinks I'm nuts. Actually I was looking for something small enough to haul around on my 6000 lb. car trailor but I saw this one advertised in the paper locally. I looked at it and said, what the heck, I could always unload it when I lose interest. Could be a real money maker. I think it's a 4500. Can't tell until I go over it for model and serial no.'s. The old markings have been worn and painted over.

The guy originally wanted $6000. we settled on $4750. I'll drive it home Saturday.

Good deal,I just bought an old Clark/Michcan 2 1/2 yd loader for my snow removal business,I used it yesterday to move the 13" of wet snow we had,push with the GMC's until they cant windrow it any higher,then one pass with loader and i can go right down the windrow ,and push it to the end of the lot.Awesome power from Detriot deisel-i think is about 125hp.I gotta small hydro return hose leak,bu that'll be an easy fix.

I've got a Ford 1900 with a bucket in the front. I change the oil and put fuel in it. It just keeps going and going...

I drove the beast home Saturday. About 4 miles. I had my wife driving my 6.5 behind me.

After looking it over I saw "4500" painted over on the front of the grill. I'm working on finding out what year it is.

There's a sticker under the hood that says Model D5011F. I'm not sure what that means.

Anyway, I took it back in the woods and in about 10 minutes I was stuck. I drove over a 2 ft deep mud pond (no visible water, covered with leaves). I had two things going against me. One.... I never worked a backhoe, two... one side was way in the mud, bottomed, while the other side was on firm soil. Everytime I tried to crab it with the hoe, it leaned more like it was gonna tip over. Went back to the house and brought back some boards. I put the boards under the outrigger or whatever you call them. Raise the low side with the outrigger then pulled with the hoe. Eventually after dragiing and repositioning the boards about five times, I got out.

That was fun! Show me a four wheeler that can climb itself out of a mud pit!

It's a four speed with a torque converter. No clutch. Very easy to operate. It's leaking trans fluid right where the trans is bolted to the bell housing. It's a big flange bolted together. Only leaks when its running. I wonder if it's just a gasket leak or it's leaking from the bolts. Any way that looks like a huge job. Oil dry is a little cheaper.

Congrat's on the purchase. If you don't already know about it, check out www.tractortips.com (http://www.tractortips.com) .

Also, check out www.yesterdaystractors.com (http://www.yesterdaystractors.com) . They have all kinds of info on older tractors and also a serial number look-up, if you find yours. There are also links to forums similar to DP for specific tractor brands.

Thanks Maverick,

Here's what I found out....

The D5011F breaks down as follows:
D = 4000 series
50 = industrial
1 = diesel
1 = no pto
F = 4/4 T-C power reversing

Now I need a pressure washer.
