I recently bought a '93 GMC TopKick which has the 3116 CAT w/6 speed trans. Are there any forums like this for the "bigger" diesel engines? How about places that sell performance parts or offer technical advice?

Any help is appreciated!!!!

You could ask around on the www.ford-diesel.com (http://www.ford-diesel.com) forum, they have a section devoted just to the F-650 and F-750's which are available with the Cat 3126b (basically a 3116 bored 5 mm over)

As far as performance parts for your 3116 you need to first know if it has mechanical direct injection or HEUI (hydraulic electronic unit injection). The 3116 was offered with both setups. Being a 93' model I would suspect it is mechanical but 93' is also about the time HEUI came out so it could possibly be HEUI. I have never heard of any performance parts for these engines but like all engines that dosent mean it dosent have the potential to put out more that it had from the factory. From what I can tell the 3116 was offered with Hp ratings starting at 170 and go up to 300 HP. Torque started at 420 and topped out at 735 ft.lbs. Alot of times the only differnce between these engines was the fuel rate. I suspect your truck to be rated between 200 to 230 Hp. If yout truck is mechanically injected you could turn the fuel up a hair and bump power up to around 250 or maybe even more. You would also want to increase the breathing by opening up the air flow on both the exhuast and the intake sides. If your truck is HEUI then maybe a differnt or custom chip would be needed. A simple chip from a higher rated engine could do the trick but Im not positive this would work. Boost pressure could also be increased but not recommended unless you know the engines limitations. The same goes for increased fuel rates.

On another note a local wrecker company in town has a kodiak roll-back like yours but a newer model with the 3126 engine. They have 4" straight exhaust with a crhome 5" tip exiting in front of the rear passenger side tire on this truck and, man it sounds sweet. Similar to a straight piped 5.9 cummins but louder and alot deeper tone. I dont know if they have done any mods to this truck or not but I will ask. They aslo have a 6.5 wreker with dual 3" stacks and a Dodge cummins with dual 3" stacks. The dodge sounds like any other striagt piped dodge but the 6.5 sounds good. Reminds me of a big block gas with headers and glass packs. The driver can even make fire blow out of them (powerstrokes with stacks can to) any way Im rambling as usual. I hope I was of any help.

Thanks for the link! My 3116 is the 200hp version, which I believe is not HEUI, but itdoes have a turbo and an aftercooler. It also has dual chrome stacks on it, which make it sound pretty mean! I want to say the torque is somewhere in the 500+ range, but I am totally new to diesels, so don't hold me to it! Thanks for the info!

Being as the "other guys" have a medium duty area. Is this something that can be done here? I have a Medium duty, granted it's a Navistar, but from reading other posts, others either have them, work on, sell, use at work or other wise. Also since GM is supposed to put the D/A combo in the upcoming new medium duty GM's, wouldn't it make sense to start an area for this soon to be budding market.
I have no idea what this would take to do, and I realize that JimB does a lot with other sections to watch, running a business, wife, family, (grand?)kids, etc. I'd be willing, if there was something I could do up here in the NW with my computer, to help operate said area in someway shape or form.
This is just a thought. I am assuming since the DP is a member driven page/e-zine format that we/ us should help, suggest, where and whenever possible on ways to improve the system for our enjoyment etc. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Performance parts for a 3116.. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/smile.gif all you need is a Cat dealer. The first thing they will look at is how much the drivetrain is rated for, then if there is room they should be able to change HP and torque by hooking up an interface and typing a few numbers if your ECM is compatible with a higher rating and that is assuming that it is an E model.

I would think that bombing a 3116..( this is great stuff.. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif ) would be VERY similar to the approach that a Cummins would need to take. You might try a little lurking around the TDR. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/wink.gif

I have worked on alot of 3116 in the heavy equipment. There is a easy way to increase the HP of a 3116. If you don't know what you are doing you will damage the engine. If you remove the valve cover you will see a 13mm size bolt with a CAT governor lock tag on it. If you remove the lock tag and bolt you will see the fuel adjusment. It is a 10 mm nut with a 3mm allen screw in the center. Lossen the nut and turn the allen screw out 1/2 turn = about 2psi of boost. There is a special tool for this, but a 10mm socket and allen wrench will work in a pinch. If you get your OT number from the valve cover I can tell you what the max boost your allowed. If any doubts any Cat dealer can do this for you. All Warranties, if any will be void. You are also tampering with emmission control, so you better check first.
