My uncle bought a 2005 and thinks the 245's fall well short of manly....

I got'em and stuck'em on the stock rims. Then cranked the torsion bars about 3/4 of an inch up.
35k miles on them and they are not wearing incorrectly, except the rear seem to be getting bald. :D :D Not sure why... heheheh

Diablo Predator!

My 3500 came with 265's, and that's plenty of tire for me personally...

Yea, I got a 2005 2500HD and would like to put something other than 245's on it too... I'd sure like to see an answer to this one.

I ran 285s on my '03 from new until 34k when I traded it. I ran them on the stock rims and with regular rotation they were going to easily make 40-45k miles. Looks MUCH better than the 245s and only a very slight rub at full steering lock, not a problem.

I have a 2005 crew 4wd that I had taken to the tire store as soon as possible and place 285 BFG all terains on. I did have a slight srape in reverse while turning but a small grinder at the bottem inside edge of the plastic solved that. It wasn't very bad at all. I did sense a loss in perceived power immediately. It seemed that the turbo didn't spool up until about 2800 rpm,s. I then bought a predator which made it zip. On a side note the predator caused the shifts to be really odd at first. As if the transmission had missed the gear between shifts. Lots better the more I drive it but it still seems to almost slip as it changes gears. Is this normal??

The allison has a "learn" feature it takes it some time to figure out what you did to it!!!

Drive it like you stole it!!

The 2005 2500HD's come with 6.5 inch rims. I can't find a tire larger than a 245 that will fit my stock rims. I'd need to buy 8 inch rims to load up some 285's...

I don't know for sure about the rim size, but I ran 265 bfg's on my 99' crew w/454 for 100,000+ miles ( several sets). never had a problem pulling small dozers and such. The 285's are on the stock rims on my '05 and the are wearing just fine. I think the tread on the BFG tires are a little more narrow than some and this might make a difference.

I have 2003 4x4 4dr short bed,duramax/allison, with bgf at's 295x75-16 on my stock rims, I'm using Hill Offroad front keys, which give me approx 2-3" of front lift, with no harsh ride, I use Hypertech Box for tire diameter change and on level one. also tow 38' 5th wheel toy box that weighs in at 15000lbs. all work super good, the tires are load range "d", but have higher carrying than some "e" load range... also I had to trim from=nt corners of my bumper plastice for turning.... Hope this helps...

Chris, my stock rims are the standard 6.5 by 16 aluminum mags. I have not had any trouble. I pull a triple axle gooseneck, with a 15k JD 450 on it.

Hmmm... Those 285's spec out with an minimum of a 7.5" rim (8" recommended). It might ride OK, but is it safe? Those engineers didn't just pull that 7.5" rim spec out of thin air...

I think lots of guys are running the big tires on stock rims, I know I did. I never had any problems and the tires wore perfectly. I am pretty sure those rim sizes are reccomendations and that they are based more on adverse wear than safety.

I have another truck that I run 35x12.5-15s on a 7.5 inch wide rim, never had any problems with that one either.

In a perfect world, an 8" wide rim would be ideal but if $$$ is an issue, I did fine with my stock rims.

I agree - the stock tires look like crap. I took the 16" aluminum rims off my 2003, and swapped them to my 2000 crew-cab (classic body). The 2003 is a work truck any way, so it got the steel wheels. I run 305s on the 2003, 2000, and the 1996. I haven't had too much trouble with rub, only when the Boss V-plows are on these trucks. One fella mentioned grinding down the plastic skirt on the front bumper - I had to do that on my '03. I run Goodyear Wrangler AT/S - and have had better wear with these over many others.

Hello, this is my first post, hope it helps. I found link in the jan. 2005 issue of 4wheel & Off Road. The article featured an IFS Leveling kit for cheap. Will allow you to fit 285/75-16 or 33's on your 01 and up 2500HD.You will also have to get longer shocks and an allignment, budt still cheaper than a lift kit. [URL=http://www.offroadunlimited.com/

Not sure you need 4 new shocks when you are only lifting the front end

I am a newbie as well, but as you can see from my post i am running 305 70 16s mudders on my 04, and it is bone stock. I turned the torsion bars up just a hair, too much makes it ride like crap, and trimmed a little plastic. Only rubbing is in reverse at full lock and hit a bump. They are on 8" wheels.

I'd go with 255/85/16's on the stock wheels. If you look at a 255/85 vs a 285/75 side by side the difference in width is minor on the stock 6.5" rims. You'll see more difference between them if you put the 285's on an 8" wheel widthwise. The 85's will have less crown and actually give you the height you want and still be wider than the 245/75 without much rubbing. I've got a 2002 with some minor crankage on the torsion bars and they only rub the driver's side if I get rough while turning. About 24k on some Dunlop radial mud rovers - decent mileage for a mud terrain. I figure I'm going to get 30k out of these, not bad. Probably going with a 255/85 AT or AP type tire next time around.

DarylB,

I've got the same tires and get about 30k out of them. I see you live in White Hall, AR. I've got a friend that lives in the Pine Bluff/White Hall area. Was just down there last month. I'm running a buddies set of 285/75's on stock aluminum wheels now. I forgot how quiet AT's are!!

I just put new tires & wheels on my '02. I went to Discount Tire to pick up some E-rated 265s, when I asked if they had any H2 pull-ofs. I left with a set of 5 wheels and tires for $475. I've already sold one 315/70R17 (the spare, never used) for $100, and I hope to get around $200 for the rest of them.
I didn't want to mess around with a lift, any trimming, or bumper mods, so I bought 285/70R17 BFG A-Ts. Personally, I love the look. They're about the same size as the 285/75R16s, but with a slightly lower profile look with the bigger wheels. I also really like the peace of mind of having properly sized wheels for the tires, no matter how many people have done it with no problems. Unfortunately, the tires are about $25 more each, plus you have to poney up some dough for the wheels. All in all I'm extremely happy though, after years with those crummy 245s.

I went from the 245's to the 285's on my 02 CC D/A SB and noticed a shake in the truck. Dealer told me it was the tires. I took themn off went down to a 265 and still had the shake. Dealer finally tells me it's and inherent problem with the truck,it is a desing flaw. I tell him thanks for misdiagnosing the problem and me haveing to spend a small fortune on tires. Once my BFG's wear out I an definitley going back up to the 285 but probably on wider rims.

personally---i am on my second set of 305 remingtons---got around 45000 outta the first set--and am almost 20000 into the second set of 305 remingtons---they drive fine---tho i had a small amount of trimming and in reverse at full lock have a slight rub----other than that cranked and matched the T-arms and drive---all has been ok!!!
