When are you guys changing the filter on the Allison? I heard after the FIRST 5,000 miles then go by the book.

Talk to me.

Ranger354,

If I recall correctly, the manual that came with the truck says change at 25,000, but the Allison manual that I downloaded online says this:

Required Inital Filter Change @ 5,000 miles

Recommended Fluid and Filter Change interval with non-TES295 fluid (DEXRON III) = 25,000 miles or 12 months for Severe Vocation or 50,000 miles or 24 months for General Vocation.

Recommended Fluid and Filter Change interval with TES295 fluid (Transynd) = 50,000 miles or 24 months for Severe Vocation or 100,000 miles or 48 months for General Vocation.

Recommended Fluid and Filter Change interval with mixture of TES295 and non-TES295 fluids (Transynd + DEXRON III) = 25,000 miles or 12 months for Severe Vocation or 50,000 miles or 24 months for General Vocation.

I changed mine at 5000 and I just did it again at 15000. I figure that at $8 it's cheap insurance. Next time I'm going to get the deep pan.

I thought I read somewhere to change the filter after the first 5,000 miles. Guess I need to do that.

John, You talking about a deep pan on the trany or a longer/larger filter?

Thanks, Jim

Ranger,
Be sure to shop around for the filter...3 stealers in the north Dallas area wanted anywhere from $38 to $50 for it. I found it at Stewart and Stevenson for $9!!!

A deeper pan for the trans. The deeper pan is the one that Allison puts on these units. The pan that we have is a special shorter one that increases the ground clearance. The deep one doesn't hang below the crossmember though. I want to do this to increase fluid capacity and to run cooler. A larger filter would be cooler too. :D

Ranger -
Deer season has arrived...get in close with a bow!!! I am on the board with 5x6 elk (muzzleloader @ 30 yds) and a spike white tail (bow @ 22 yds). Gunning for a doe with the 44 mag this weekend. Good luck with your hunting!

Shot a 5 point 120# buck at 20 yards yesterday with a bow. Sure felt good to pick it up in the D/A.

I was encouraged to change my spin on trans filter Every engine oil change..and I plan on doing just that..

I think the deeper pan takes a different oil pickup tube, also..

Yes it does require a different internal filter/pick up. You can re-use the pan gasket also. I just did mine yesterday. Temp seems to be staying below 160* in stop and driving.
Find an Allison dealer or distributor for the spin filter, $7 vs $38.

EXPSD - Nice job! No luck this past weekend. I'll try again in 2 weeks.
