My 2004 Dmax now has 19,000 miles and with all the glory of having a new and fun truck I overlooked changing the Allison spin-on filter at 7,500 miles. Is this easily changed, or do I need to have the dealer change it? I used to do all my own maint years ago ... so I can still roll around on a creeper if need be.

Welcome to the forums!

The Allison spin-on filter is a piece of cake. It's the red smallish filter on the forward/left underside of the tranny. You will need a small filter wrench, or a strap wrench to get it off and install the new one. DO NOT MISS THE MAGNET!! There is a large washer-looking magnet on top of the filter. Clean it and install it onto the new filter. If you don't see the magnet, it may be stuck up on the nipple. Be sure to use some ATF, oil, or some grease on the seal. Don't worry about the fluid lost in the old filter, you won't miss it. You could pre-fill the new one, if you want.

That's all there is too it.

I just did mine (2nd time) and the filter says hand tighten only -- don't use a wrench :D

I saw the "hand tight" note on my filters also. I tried that, and it seeped ATF after about 500 miles, some towing involved. There was a change in the filter gasket that may have something to do with that.

Since, I've given them 1/4 turn past hand tight, and all's been well. I'd rather have it a little tight, than a little loose.

BTW
My "hand tight" ain't no wimpy thing. The 1/4 turn more with a wrench is pretty stout.

Find an Alli dealer if you can. Cost is under half from the Chevy dealer.
