View Full Version : anyone change the allision spin on filter?

should i change this filter ? my truck has 6,200 miles on it and i am going to change the fuel and engine filter , thought i should change this allision filter to . anyone done this ? how much fluid loss is there , and what fluid do i need to top it off?

Yes. Change it. Per maintenance req's, it should have been changed at 5,000 miles. I change mine initially @ 2500, then every 10,000 miles.

It's an easy job- just remember to remove the magnet from the old filter (it's a black ring on top of the filter). Clean the magnet, install it on top of the new filter, and screw it on.

You will lose about 1 pint or so of fluid.

Proper fluid to refill it with is any Dexron III or Dexron IV Automatic Transmission Fluid.

Yes, I would change it. It is one of the most simple things you will do on your truck.

Spin it off, remove the magnet from the threaded end and put it on the new filter. Spin the new one on and your are done.

You just need a small pan to catch a small amount of fluid. I lost less than 1/2 a pint. You may have to add a small amount of fluid back.

Buy your filters from an Allison dealer. They are about $8. Your GM dealer will be much more.

I ordered a few filters from kennedy diesel, along with fuel and engine old filters.
