Manualy down-shifting the Allison

How many manualy down-shift your Allison when towing a large load? Towed my 5er for the first time with my new 2500HD and down-shifted out of Drive when we were going up a fair sized grade. I was in the Tow-Haul mode. Habit from driving my gaser. The Allison sounded a little strange so I put it back in drive. Should I just let it do all the thinking or can I down-shift? Thanks

I always leave mine in cruise control, If it's not in cruise, I do not down shift up or down hills. 168,000 and no tranny problems. D is for delightful.

When in the tow/haul mode towing my fifth wheel, I just tap on the brakes and it downshifts on its own. I can't say enough about how well this transmissions downshifts.

There was a tremendous amount of engineering that went into making the alli tow friendly, let it work on its own, Use tow/haul when towing, I always have to speed back up when slowing down with boat on. rtq is right, tap the brakes and keep it on the pavement!
