Front axle

Newbie changed front axle lube but how do you know how much to put in book said 1/2 in. below the filler plug hole.

I just changed mine last weekend. I drove the truck up on a set of ramps, dropped the skid plate and drained it. It took a couple ounces short of 2 quarts. I used Amsoil synthetic. While I was at it I greased everything since it was easier without the skid plate on. There was a lot of junk on the magnet too.
