What are they? My brother is looking at purchasing an '03HD. One of the dealerships he phoned gave him a price and "that includes the rear disk brake guards that we install, 'cause you need 'em". The rear brakes already have dust shields, so this must be something else. Can anyone here enlighten me on what these do, if I want 'em on my '02, and maybe part #'s?

Thanks,

The rear brake shields are a must if You drive on gracel roads like We do. I have an 03 with 36000 Km on it and I have had one set of pads and rotors installed on warrenty at about 20000 Km. The present set of rotors are badly scored and will need peplacement soon. GM in their infinate wisdom designed the rear calipers on the front of the rotor and the gravel stones sit on top of the pads and just grind into the rotors. Why anyone would do this kind of installation is beyond Me. The only other application I have ever seen is on a Porsche and they have extensive shielding to eliminate this problem. I can be driving along and hear this squealing grinding sound, I stop and move a few feet in reverse which seems to lift the stone out and away I go. This is OK on a country road but is NOT recommended on busy roads.
The shields are OK but they do not eliminate the problem. I intend on going back to the dealer for another warrenty repair soon. I had to contact a lawyer last time after the service manager would not fix the rotors. Just some information and a suggestion that anyone who drives on gravel should chech teir rotors for scoring.

I have seen friends of mine go through pads and have rotors turned after as little as 15000 kms.

I purchased a set of guards (shields) from my dealer. They are manufactured by EXCEL Welding and Manufacturing and are high quality stainless. They are simple shields that wrap around the front of calipers and attach using existing bolts on the calipers in a few minutes.

The cost was about $95 can and imho they are an inexpensive alternative to brake and rotor wear.
