Do all the 2500 hd d/a trucks have an auto lockup rear differential? I'm assuming they do but thought I'd ask. Mine is an 02 4x4.

The rear locking differential is not a standard feature, it's an option. Look on your sticker in the right-hand options box for locking differential, or look at the sticker inside your glovebox door for the G80 code.

My codes include the g80, happy to have it. My old 94 2wd gmc 1500 had a locker and it got me through winter just fine. Nice to have 4wd in case but I'm a firm beliver in good tires being the real key. Had a full size 4wd jimmy years ago and it was a pig on skates, had to be pulled from a shallow ditch in winter, big off road boots. When I got serious about 4 wheeling I bought a toyota land cruiser (the real ones not the luxo cruisers) . It was UN stoppable. Straight 6 , manual hubs 4speed stick and a steering wheel and ride like a tractor. This dmax truck is a limo in comparison.

I thought it was an option on HDs but came standard in the Diesel power package????

It may be an "automatic addition" to the diesel power package, but it was an additional $285 option listed on my window sticker in 2001.

I'm not for sure but I do think it is now part of the diesel package @ no additional charge....I'm sure you end up paying for it somehow though....I'll look at a new unit to be sure.

As heavy as these trucks are on the front axle, I am sure it makes good sense to the warranty dept to put lockers on all of them. Locking rear diffs take alot of stress off the front diff when you are in the gnarly stuff. Factor in the diesel torque and weight and it's probably cheap insurance to make them standard.
