I was at an aurthorized Allison dealer today and picked up a chart showing the gear ratios of the 1000 series. Don't know if this has been posted here or not.
1st gear = 3.10:1
2nd gear = 1.81:1
3rd gear = 1.41:1
4th gear = 1.00:1
5th gear = 0.71:1
Reverse = -4.49:1
It then listed Ratio Coveage (whatever that is)?
Front = 4.37

Ratio Coverage is 3.10/0.71 = 4.37
It gives a feel for how "wide" the transmission is, the spread between the highest and lowest ratio. The Allison is VERY wide for an automatic, only the 4L60-E/TH700-R4 are similar.
(4L80-E for example is 3.35)
ZF-6 ratios:
1st gear = 5.79:1
2nd gear = 3.30:1
3rd gear = 2.10:1
4th gear = 1.31:1
5th gear = 1.00:1
6th gear = 0.72:1
Reverse = -5.23:1
Coverage = 5.79/.72 = 8.04 Which is about a wide as manual trannys get outside of big rigs, and yet a slightly taller high and a lower low (particularly in reverse) would be nice. Some of us are hard to please!

That sounds about right, but then I'd miss the tight 4/5 split.
