Well it's time to change the rear diff fluid on the old girl. I know that there has been some debate over weather or not to just drain and fill the rear end or to pull the rear cover and clean the rear end out with a couple of cans of break cleaner. I think I am going to do that later of the two. So here are my questions. What is the torque value for the rear diff cover bolts? Does the rear diff have a gasket or is it the old RTV type? Should I get a gasket? And what type of fluid are you all using? Thanks for the help.

In order to give a specific answer we'd need to know what make/model/year/engine/trans/diff combo you have.

Generally speaking though, most diff covers still use a gasket. Unless the truck has tons of hard miles on it, or you haven't stayed current with the maintenance, I don't think you'll need to clean it out. Let it drain a good long time -- at least 1/2 an hour -- and then add a high quality synthetic, like Amsoil or Royal Purple. But remember the cardinal rule; never over-fill it, or you'll be in for a lot of problems.

This will be the first change of fluid for the rear end. The truck has about 1000 miles on it.
What problems occur when you over fill it? I have never heard of any problems with a little to much fluid in the rear diff?

D-N-Tyke:
I have the 2001 and you do not have to remove the rear cover. I took mine off to check it out at the first oil change and there was nothing left in there, someone did a good job designing the inside of the diff. because all the oil does drain out the hole. I drained it while it was still quite warm -- been sitting for an hour after a 35 mile run. I didn't find even a small shaving or soot. I did however rip the gasket, and had to use gasket sealer when I put it back on. I can't remember the torque spec. for the bolts.
