View Full Version : Stock Rims and 285 Tires

I put the revo 285/70 16s on a set of American Racing rims 3 months ago. The rims are starting to pit and I am thinking of returning them for the cash and going back to the stock rims seeing as how I am ready to hit the 36000 mark and thats where the tranny warranty runs out anyway.( I kept the stock rims and tires for that reason) My question is will the 7 inch stock rims work with these tires TOWING close to the limits? My pin weight is probably over by a few hundred pounds but added air bags for a little help with the suspension. I am concerned about the tires on the 7 inch rims instead of the 8, running the top tire pressures. Any safety issues? How bad will they wear? Thanks

Which stock rims are 7 inches?
The Stock Forged Aluminum PYO's are only 6.5 inches. I thought the Factory Steels were also 6.5 inches.
I've been debating this same issue. With my 5ver, my rear axil is right at the 6082 lbs limit of the 245 tire. I'd like to go with the 10 ply 265 to get the 6830 lbs rating, however the 3200 lbs rated 6.5 inch factory rim is not recommended by the tire manufacturers. I would think too narrow a rim would de-rate the weight rating. I didn't really want to spend anywhere from $700 or more for new forges aluminum rims, but that seems to be my only choice, or save the money and stay with the 245 tires..

i've been running 16x8 racing aluminum wheels with 285's about 100k with no problems. wheels with stainless centers and lugnuts ran me less than $500 for all 4 with my tires mounted and balanced and on the truck.

another option is to buy a set of hummer h2 17x8.5 rims for around $200 with factory pyo centers and mount 265 or 285 e-rated tires on them. i did this on both the 96 and 98 k3500's (srw trucks) and then bought 265/70-17 michelins off ebay for about $250 that are close to new condition. with mounting and all i've got about $500 in each truck for the rims and tires.

Murray, the stock rims are only 6.5". The rule of thumb seems to be anything up to 265's is OK on the stockers. Anything over that (like 285's you mentioned), and there is a good chance of "crowning" or other uneven wear, especially if you are towing on the heavy side. JMHO, but I would either go to a 265 on the stockers, or spring for 8" wide rims for the 285's (or larger). Good Luck, DinoMax smile.gif smile.gif

Stay away from American racing wheels.I have four sets (I should have learned by now) and they all pitted very fast.

I have been running 285/75-16 BFG AT's since new and now have over 30k miles on them. They are D rated and carry more than the 245s but less than a 265 E tire. The tires are wearing perfectly with regular rotation. I should get 40k miles out of them easily. Besides, the truck looks "right" on 285's. Those stock tires are an absolute joke. Funny how Ford and Dodge can fit decent stock tires but GM gives us the wimpiest donuts availible.

Been running 285's 75R/16's almost since day 1.

I have 36k+ miles on them.

I run 50 psi empty,

65 PSI (I think) loaded.

NO, I repeat, NO uneven wear or crowning. I rotate every 5k.

Should get 45k out of them, 50 if I push them to the wear indicators.
