At 7500 miles the manual says Allison Transmission Only: Replace the external control-main filter. What is that? The spin-on filter? Why isn't it called that?

At 25,000 it says to change automatic transmission fluid and spin-on filter....

Yes .. the external spin on filter is the one that gets changed at regular intervals - also be sure to remove the magnet from the old filter and transfer to the new. The Allison 1000 series user manual (available at www.allisontransmission.com) (http://www.allisontransmission.com) says to make the first external filter change at 5k vs GM's 7.5k. There is also a filter in the sump that, according to Allison, only needs changing when overhauling the transmission.
