More pictures guys...
Changed out the pan to the deep one. Also changed to Allison TranSynd Synthetic ATF.

Pan off... here are the solenoid valves that are controlled by the computer. They are the electro-mechanical part of the shifting and "learning" feature.

Shifting seems more carlike with the new fluid. The shifts are more like a single event than the logical shifts previously.
Give me some time to confirm it though. First impressions aren't always the best ones to report.

Nice pictures. I'm sure it affects the cooling but how much over stock set-up?

dmax

The key to transmission life is keeping it from overheating. This was not an expensive proposition. $43 for the pan. The TranSynd was $28 a gallon. Took three.

I have know idea how much difference in running temp but it sure do know it takes longer to heat larger quantities. This should help keep the fluid cooler under heavy load.

Besides, the pan looks good. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/wink.gif

Dmax,

What do you think about the deeper pan and minimal off roading. Will it take a beating?
Thanks

LFH,

It hangs about an inch or so below the frame but is not below the transmission crossmember.

I don't feel it's overly exposed. I wouldn't take it to the Rubicon but for normal offroading it's fine. Serious offroading would require skid plate protection.

crosenb,
I got the pan at an Allison distributor.
Here's the topic that got me going. It's got everything you need to know.

Dmax,

In your first picture those are the Solenoids that control the valves..

From left to right..
F Solenoid which controls Converter Lockup
next is D, E and on the top is C, these three move (buy turning off or On) valves to obtain the next gear lower or higher..
The last two (from left to right) are B Trim and A Trim solenoids, they cushion the on-going and off-going clutchs for a smooth upshift and downshift...

I really like the Idea of going to TransSynd fluid if your going to modify the engine.. The deep pan is another good idea.... You may not see higher Trans temps if you do not have the Deep pan and/or TranSynd fluid, but the clutchs have a much better chance of living with this fluid.. Transynd is a VERY good product...

SteveO,

If we know which solenoid controls TQ converter lockup, we should be able to find a way to force lockup.

Ford people have a way of locking up the torque converter just for getting dyno run results of course http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/smile.gif

mguebert,

Controlling lockup (on say a dyno) is not a problem.. This can be done without any special magic.. A tech 2 or one of the Allison software programs can accomplish this.. I will not go into detail about how it's done, but yes it can be done..

SteveO, I have seen other replacement pans (not sure if they are available for the Allison) That offer increased fluid capacity and are finned like a heat sink to aid in cooling. If something like that was used with the Transynd could it be TOO cool in the Winter? Is there a temp the Allison likes to warm up to?

Sledzep,

I'm familiar with the larger capacity pans your asking about and believe me the Allison Deep pan will provide enough cooling without the fins.. To much? I doubt it, because the fluid still passes through the radiator which will warm it up...
"Temp it like to operate at"> Normal operating temps should be in the 160-200 area.. The transmission temp has to be above 100 degrees for it to obtain Torque Converter Lockup if that's what your asking...

wangotango,

The oil pan gasket is a reusable type that will last just about the life of the vehicle.. It will not tear or rip, it's made of plastic with a rubber material imbedded in the center.. Nice gasket http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/smile.gif The 4L80e is also like this if I'm not misatken.
Oil pan bolts Torque to 18-22 Ftlb
Drain plug> 26 ftlb
I've never had one to leak after the pan was off and I don't know of anyone who has retorqued the bolts..

BigAl

wangotango,

You're probably familiar with old gasket materials that took a "set", and sometimes required re-torquing the bolts afterwards. This gasket is designed so that when the bolts are properly torqued, the gasket achieves the proper "crush", and will not relax or take a "set".........hence, bolts stay at torque.

Biggest advantage to the larger/deeper oil pan is the fact it takes longer for the oil volume to "cycle" through the transmission. Fewer cycles through the converter and gear packs (where all the heat is generated) = longer oil life! http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/smile.gif

I like my transmissions to run at/around 180 degrees F; and yes, they can run "too cool". Really cold oil can cause some peculiar shifts, but usually you're having engine problems (hard start - no start) long before you're having tranny problems. This is especially true of Diesels! I know of folks who have used engine oil heaters who were able to get their engines started, but when they put the tranny into gear, it wouldn't go. They finally had to use tranny oil heaters.......I think they were called Cal-Rods.

The guys from Canada and Northern US States can probaby offer some horror stories here! My one personal experience involved a visit to Fargo, ND, where the expected high for the day was -10F (The locals called it balmy!) Car started just fine, drove it about 5 miles and turned it off. When I came back about 10 minutes later, it wouldn't start. Seemed the short distance driven allowed some condensation to form, but when I shut it off, it froze solid, preventing some linkage from operating properly. The guy that fixed it found the problem in about 3 seconds and said, "Yep....happens all the time!".

Picked up my new deeper tranny oilpan today at the IH dealer nearby. Got to talking to one of the mechanics in the shop,he told me to only ever use the Alison brand little spin-on filter because the warrantee would be voided if another filter was used. Apparently they are also the Alison transmission repair facility.
Thought I would share this little bit of info. Stu

When you changed to the deep pan on your Allison did you have to change the dipstick also or will it still read the actual level in the deeper pan? http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/confused.gif

I didn't change the dipstick. I made the assumption that they still want the level to remain the smae under the valve body.

Also, BigAl coached us and since he didn't say anything about it, my assumption must be correct!

RING MAGNET? There's a RING MAGNET!! I bought an Allison spin-on and an engine oil filter at my dealer and had engine oil & filter and the tranny filter changed at a lube joint in San Antonio at 2000 miles. I didn't know anything about any RING MAGNET and I'm sure my magnet when in the hopper with the original Ally filter!! CRAP!

A lot has been said about changing the engine and rear end oil at 500 miles etc. I always found a lot more junk it my drain pan from the tranny than anywhere else. There was always a lot of aluminum from overcasting etc. What is the recommended mileage on the first trans oil and filter change? Later! Lone Eagle

hoot and all,

Sorry I haven't gotten back sooner on this one guys, but your assumption is correct. Since the dipstick tube remains the same, the dipstick still "sticks" down into the oil in exactly the same place it did before, so everything is cool!

For those of you who want lots more information, Allison has a Mechanic's Tips booklet (actually a set of two!), and in the first one there are two pages dedicated to understanding dipstick/tube installation, dipstick markings and where.

You can download it by going to www.allisontransmission.com. (http://www.allisontransmission.com.), under the section labeled "Publications". Search by Transmission Series (1000 Series).

dmax, when you installed your pan and changed over your fluid did you pump or flush the system to get the Dexron III out of your torque converter and trans? I changed my ATF over to Amsoil synthetic in my 99 6.5TD with a 4L80E and did a "feed and bleed" after changing the pan and filter of about 3 to 4 gallons to get the old fluid that didn't drain out of the system.

I went to a Pacific Detroit Diesel-Allison Dealer in Portland Oregon today to pick up a few Allison spin on filters. Nice price at $8.87 each. I mentioned I read on the Diesel Page Forum that a few people had lost their filter magnets when having their filter changed. Both parts guys became very concerned that this could happen. They copied a page from their Parts Catolog showing the filter, magnet, nipple, and bell housing and gave it to me. They said other model Allison transmissions have the magnet inside the pan and they imagined that this could happen. Then they gave me the part number for the magnet, 29535617, and said they sell them for $2.07 each.

Great place to do business and about one third the price GM charges for the same filter.

SDWA,

Go to the following web site and type in for city, state, and zip code Portland, OR, 97212 in step one. Then check the "25 Mile" box for step 2. Finally check the "Any of the Above" box for step three. Or you could put in your own address and check the 500 Miles box but you would have more dealers to wade through.

http://www.vicinity.com/allisontrans/startprx.hm

The forth one on the list at 5061 N. Lagoon Ave. is the one you want, Pacific Detroit Diesel-Allison Company. Just take I-5 South to the Swan Island Exit. Once you are off the freeway keep going straight to Swann Island for about a mile and 5061 will be on your left . If you put in your real address, their site will give complete driving directions from your door to theirs.

Tell them I sent you and they won't charge you sales tax.

No need in paying $28 a gallon for the Allison TranSynd Synthetic ATF. You can get the Amsoil Universal ATF which is good for ALL automatics for about $21 a gallon when buying in 2.5 gallon containers. Can anyone tell me if the cooler lines are easy to get at and take off on the Allison? Also could someone send me a used filter off one?
