I have 16000 miles on my dually and have
started feeling a minor rattle in the
steering typically while turning. I
read the GM Techlink which outlines the
problem and fix for the 2500HD pickups.
Has anyone with the 3500HD experienced the
problem and had it fixed?

I have just @11,000 on mine and have not noticed any rattle in the steering wheel. I have vibrations from improper wheel/tire balance that the dealer can't seem to fix but other than that no problems.....knock on wood.

Have you guy's ever tried to turn the steering wheel in a tight parking spot with out moving the vehicle and run out of steering power and the steering wheel won't turn? This has happened to mine on rough concrete or in sod and asphalt-Gm changed the pump-then the box-but have not cured the problem! 31000miles on 01 K3500 ext/cab-but have never had the rattle

Just under 11,000 miles and no steering problems as of yet. I have though been keeping an eye on my left rear wheels. I've seen axle grease on the inside wheel but it's not been as heavy as it was earlier but I see the tell tale signs in the wheelwell of it being slung around.

56Nomad.... Yes I had the rattle...got it fixed at a GMC dealer in PA. He said it was new grease that it needed. I no longer have the 'rattle'. I told him about the posts here. He said the new grease will not allow the problem to return. He also said if it does he will warrant the work. 54000 miles on the truck.

Mackin,

Thanks for reading the fine print on the
intructions which includes the C/K 3500 series.

Paintdude,

Thanks for the photos of both the bearing fix and intructions.

OK, HERE IS THE TECHLINK VERBAGE

Steering Column RattIe: Owners of some 1999-2002 Sierra or
Siiverado 2500HD and 1500HD pickups may comment about
a rattle noise from the steering column, particularly during low
speed parking lot maneuvers.

A new stub shaft bearing kit 26099860 has been released to address this issue.
The kit contains a bearing, a packet of lubricant and instructions.
TIP: The new bearing is a tight hand fit.
TIP: For installation, you must use essential tool J-45798 to avoid
damage to the bearing seal. This tool has been sent separately.
TIP: It is not necessary to replace I -shaft for this condition.
Although the symptoms are similar, this is not the same the
condition mentioned in bulletin 00-02-35-003A.

Now, before I bring my truck into the dealer.....
Does anyone know what is the condition (problem)
mentioned in their bulletin 00-02-35-003A?

The 003a is the lube job of the steering shaft..that fixes most trucks 1/2 tons etc..

the 003a states steering rattle while turning-cornering..

My 2002 3500 has the same problem and the dealer said it is Ok, just a quirk of the speed sensitive steering.

1822, how does it feel to be blown off by a dealer?

It just makes me sick to hear about these guys saying "It is normal, don`t worry about it." when GM has a proposed a fix for the problem, therefor admitting that there is a problem...

Come to think of it this is a "Saftey Issue"..

Just tell them the next time you take your truck in "that they will be responsible for anything this issue might cause while driving and not your insurance company..Loose steering can cause many problems while driving on the roadway"..Loose steering is what this is..

THe Techlink bulletin mentions 2500 and 1500, so does the 3500 not need the new grease to eliminate the rattle? Can we do it ourselves to prevent the problem? How?

My best guess is..The condition is end play in the worm gear of the steering box..The gear is trying to go up and down(to much clearance)..The new bearing is set with torque values like a rear end pinion, sort of(no crush sleeve)..The grease(lube repair) is packed into the bearing and helps lighter trucks, reduces clearance..

IMO up and down play in the box is going to take a toll on the steering in time..Therefore it is a saftey issue..IMO..

Yes I had the steering rattle for almost a year. They tried the grease but it didn't quite cure it. I could still feel it when I towed my trailer. I showed them the Tech link page and they ordered the bearing and replaced it. Works great now.

TO THE MAX...

I brought the truck into the dealer and
service department says that GM requires
the lube job (bulletin 00-02-35-003A)
be done first..... before they will consider
the bearing replacement. I have an
appointment for reflash of engine and
tranny plus lube steering shaft next
Tuesday.

Love the truck!

I forgot to add..If you look under your truck on the end of the steering box there will be 2 letters..the bearing replacement is for Steering Boxes with the letters CB or HD on them...The letters are on the top of the box also...

CB or HD.....
