Trouble shooting question

97 pickup 6.5 TD,It started and idled ok for a min. or so,then run rough at about 300 rpm for a min. or so, then stalled. There s lots of fuel to drain tap after the filter. Noticed the tach dont move while cranking, is this normal? If not can someone sugest next step before tow truck call? I am very new at this diesel fun but willing to learn. The tach signal comes off of the alternator. Check the battery connections. If they are older than three or four years then I would replace them. Now is a good time to look at the serpentine belt as well.

This truck depends on a lot of Amps. to run good.

If first cold season, may need additive in fuel to prevent gelling/waxing when temps below 20*F; waxing causes fuel starvation.

Thanks guys for the info help.Today I got good news and bad news.The stupid truck started and is running like a new one???? This truck has 375000 kilometers on it so watch for another S.O.S. Maybe just the checking of wiring connectors fixed the problem.(wishfull thinking)

Yep that was wishful thinking,two days later no start again.Took it to the expert,it showed fuel response time too slow.Replaced the fsd module&all OK now.Here s another mystery though,before fsd instalation my cruise control did not work & had not worked for six months,now it works???? :D

Oops! In previous post I meant to say fuel solenoid closure time too short.I m wondering if this computer code would have stopped the cruise control from engaging? 1997 6.5td

Yes, it seems that if the PCM has any issues with fuel solenoid control it disables the cruise control.
