View Full Version : How bad is -2.02 pump timing?

Just had the truck in to the shop for a different problem and I was told the pump timing was -2.02. How bad is that? Could this account for the 15% drop in MPG that I have been having? What sort of labor time should I be expecting the shop to tell me for re-adjusting the timing?

-2.02 is beyond the limit in the system, and usually sets a code. I remember reading that the -1.94 was the sweet spot where the computer was still happy advancing the engine.

Just had my pump timing set at the dealer. Cost was $100.

The OBD2 trucks will accept a TDC learn value of -2.38. Problem here is lack of information. Did they read the scan tool ad say that it was -2.02, or did they actually perform the learn?

They read it off of the scan tool. My understanding is that nothing was fixed/adjusted - they just noted to me that it was out of spec.

Was this with a Tech1/2 scan tool or generic?

I called and verified that they used a Tech 2.

Unless it is excessively harsh sounding, I'd leave it there.

John, do you mean that it shouldn't be "excessively harsh sounding" once it is warmed up? The only time that it is EXTREMELY LOUD is if I start it up when it is below freezing out and it has not been plugged in. However, after a minute or so it is fine.

Would you say that it is unlikely that the -2.02 timing is responsible for a 15% loss of MPG?

Thanks!

No, this is not my first winter. I'll tell 'ya, this loss of mileage has me stumped! I've looked at everything from tire pressure to making sure the TCC locks up well. I change the fuel filter every 3K to 5K miles and it is never in bad shape.
