I noticed my transfer case leaking fluid from the rear seal. What kind of job is it to replace the rear seal? In other words, is this a DIY or are there secret tools and/or special procedures making it a dealership job? Any other information I should know before I tackle this?

Thanks.

If its the rear seal where the drive shaft enters I can tell you how i have done them on mid 80's tucks. The first thing you need to do is drain the fluid, if there is no drain plug or the drain plug is higher than the seal its a messy job. (all the fluid will leak out when you remove the seal) Then remove the driveshaft, i use a seal puller with hooks on both ends. Be carefull not to ding up the sealing area or the new seal will leak. After its out use a seal driver or large socket the same diameter as the seal and drive seal in with a hammer. replace drive shaft refill with fluid.
