Opening it up? Does that mean running it with your foot to the floor? smile.gif

337,800 GM bone stock miles. We rebuilt the starter and alternator some time around 220,000 miles. Otherwise it was as it came from the factory. But she's opened up now and waiting for me to scrape up some cash for machine shop work.
We tore it down because it blew a head gasket.

165,000 miles untouched pump/injectors....

Items replaced so far: A/C compressor, fan belt, oil cooler/lines, nothing to major...

Cheers

If memory serves me, that 93 would have a DB2 mechanical injection pump. From what I've read at The Diesel Page, I would be surprised if there were any DS4 injection pumps that lasted that long - not totally flabbergasted, mind you, but pretty surprised.

I wonder how long anyone has had a DS4 last? I think I had one last about 150,000 miles or a bit more... I would have to check my records.

Well my 97 is a pup at 195K miles. :D

I have right at 100K on my current DS4 and I got about 95K on the first DS4.

I hope to make 300K on my 6.5TD.

Bypass oil filter ;)

190,000 miles and 162,000 on current IP.

300,000 on the first injection pump on a 95 Sub. 3 pumps later we are at 341,000. Tranny rebuild at 245,000 was the big hit. other bumps in the road were front wheel bearings with rotors attached, nearly the complete air conditioner, I have no idea how many brakes,5 ops's, 6 lift pumps and about 90 oil filters.....

209,000 currently. 5 injection pumps with last one at 115,000. Timing gears & water pump @ 160,000 but otherwise normal maintenance. 4l80e Transmission still intact.

This thing is bone stock, almost. Last week the boost control system krapped out and a turbomaster was installed. My wife usually drives it and will not allow even a set of gages. It is a bit of a hard start compared to all the other 6.5s I have had. It usually clears out the mosquitos with the first start of the day. The timing is set at -1.75. I forgot in the earlier post that the injectors and timing chain with gears were also changed to help with the smoke at startup. I would really like to swap out the exhaust as that gave me the most bang for my buck on my other 6.5s But she is afraid of the possible noise after that.

Mine just turned 320,000. IP at 66,000,water pump, aftermarket downpipe-open exhaust, alternator and tensioner, harmonic balancers at 200,000, replaced solenoids in trans. synthetic oil throughout.

I hope I get close to those long lived units.Mine only has 210000kilometers about 125000 miles.I did the 96 cooling upgrades. My FSD just went out at 200000k and I did a move to the skid pan.Today my alternator gave up the ghost. But thats all the troubles I,ve had Knock on wood .

After reading all this bad news I wanted to hear some good stuff. HEY I'M WITH CHUCK1. GLAD TO SEE THE HIGH MILES WITH JUST THE NORM PROBLEMS. I GUESS IT IS EASY TO GET WORRIED WITH ALL THE BAD ENGINE TROUBLES WE READ.
I DON'T THINK I'LL MAKE THE HIGH MILES. 97 W/68K IT SITS MORE THAN I DRIVE IT. AS MY PLATE IS TRUE, IT IS JUST A  TOW TRUCK

I must have had a bad one, 185000 km (115000 miles) and cracked both heads. Previous owner pulled some heavy loads with it. Other than IP and water pump, have not really down much else with the engine since and now have 215000+ km on it.

98 Burb, 306,000 miles, on my 4th fsd module, 3rd waste gate solenoid, 3rd starter, 3rd alternator, just replaced AC compressor and all hoses leading to rear air unit. Everything else is original, happy so far.

I'm at 195k on my 95 K1500. I have only had it 6k miles, but it appears to be all original except the IP. I can tell that's been changed.

I think it's about ready for an alternator, though. Idling with the A/C on, drops to batt voltage pretty quick - sometimes so low I get an SES light.

250,000mi. on my`92 6.5TD.Replaced belt tensioner @ 70,000 and alternater @ 200,000(still charging/bearing seized),that`s it.I hated to pull it(still have it),but I totalled the other truck with a 6 month old Peninsular motor and wanted to get my money`s worth out of it.In hindsight,I should have put an I/P,injectors,lift pump, and glow-plugs in it and kept going. Then I could have put the 300hp motor in one of my`72s.

183k, miles I did replace the IP, but only because I fried it in VO once. oops! I'm hoping to get close to 300K before I have to resurrect it from its own ashes.

Wow, I must be unluck :( .
Torque converter at 92K, 3rd IP ~95K, motor @ 98K for low compression, on my 2000.
Had a '93 CC dually that had motor/trans replaced underwarranty by previous owner in the 90Ks and by 200 the '80E was having V/B issues and the motor was having blowby issues.
Heck even had to replace a 6.2 @70K due to no compression(<280psi) that one didn't start good when I bought it with 42K on it, cracked a main too!

262,000 rock stock. Down here in South Texas I have resigned to replacing the FSD about every 25,000 miles, so I keep a spare in the glove box (they are cheap enough compared to other manufacturer parts); takes about 5 minutes to change with it mounted on the plenum. Minor stuff like starter, alt, and the cheezy little water hose connector that rots out on all the GM truck engines. I really can't say it has cost me near as dearly as some of my Ford driving friends with similar vintage and equipment trucks; they are on their 5th transmission by now at $4000-$5000/unit. My transmission is beginning to show signs of wearing out but I always tow crazy loads in overdrive (15,000-25,000lbs). If I can get away with that for this long, I figure I'm getting pretty good service out of it.

Good Day!

"...I have resigned to replacing the FSD about every 25,000 miles..." Off-subject, but you might want to consider moving that FSD to behind the drivers-side headlight. The thinking is that the heat soak after shutting down may be causing more problems than the heat produced by the FSD itself.

I got the idea from RJ. It seems like the battery would isolate it from underhood head, & some air will get through the front for cooling. I failed an FSD after IM-mounting it, so we'll see how long the behind-the-headlight holds up - I'd bet it lasts lots longer. Some day I'm gonna Sawzall a bigger hole behind the headlight for air...

If you ever try this, please let us know. With the horrible failure rate you report, a decreased failure rate would be reasonably good evidence of the behind-the-headlight location being better, which would help us all.

Blessings!
