Sounds great JD, thats what we all like to hear. Do you have a pyrometer? Just wondering were the EGT's are with this load. ;)

I guess you have a 3500 dually to handle that load. A 39 footer is a lot to handle. I had a 38' triple axle that was as big as I wanted to go.

Doesn't that put you at 10980# GVW on a 9900# GVWR truck? I get confused on this stuff, please let me know how to figure it. I own the same truck and weigh in at 9860# when loaded, I weighed the truck only with trailer attatched but not on the scales.

 According to door sticker gm say's front axle 4800. I was 4860. 60 pds over. Not to bad. gm say's rear axle 6084. I was 6120. I was 36pds over on rear not bad at all me thinks. GM say gross combined wieght of 22,000 pds for this truck. I was at 21,980 pds. only slightly over on axle's I think it should be fine. :D as far as weight goes dont think I well be that heavy again. H ad extra people and there stuff with us. So I figure on losing about 1,000 pds will check next time we go out. JD ;)

JD, I've got a similiar situation. With my 2500HD I'm within all my axle weights, the tow rating, and the GCWR. But I'm over the truck GVWR, by about 900 lbs when completely loaded - that's before happy hour, folks.

Can somebody give me a good argument why it is bad to do this??? It would seem that I'm within the limitations of the chassis, suspension, brakes, tires, drivetrain, etc. I don't understand why GM doesn't make GVWR closer to the sum of the front and rear axle ratings. Dodge & Ford seem to.

2 good arguments -

1) Because if you are ever in a crash, an ambulance chasing attorney will crawl out of his septic hole and sue you regardless of whether weight was any kind of a factor in the accident.

2) There might be a state out there somewhere that would have you sit on a scale and perhaps give you a ticket for being over your GVWR.

I fully recognize that #1 is a stronger argument than #2 smile.gif and in visiting 35+ states last year I think I only entered one scale and the attendant looked at me like I was nuts for pulling through.

personally I'm not going to worry about it. according to mfg I'm where I'm suposed to be according to weight limits. Like have said before what are the chances of get told to go thru the scales slim to non.

Rollingon I would look at your load and lose something that you really don't need. And try to get as close to max weight as possible. I know it's hard but when you take inventory you will find things that you have not used in a long time.or don't need any more. was amazed at the stuff we found in our trailer that my wife never used or needed. That was worht atlest 1000pds. GOOOOD luck. JD

As to GVW rateings; the front and rear axles are rated as are the f and r springs and f & r tires. The rear axle may be 6000#, the rear spring suspension may be 5700# and the tires may be 5800#; the limiting factor for this rear axle would be the spring rateing of 5700#, therefor the max rear GVW rateing would be 5700#. Front axles go the same route. Then add f & r rateings for the vehicle total GVWR. HTH...... bob.......

Bob - Here are the ratings from the driver's side door of my truck:

FGAWR - 4,800 lbs
RGAWR - 8,550 lbs
GVWR - 11,400 lbs

FGAWR + RGAWR = 13,350.

Check your door. GVWR is NOT the sum of the Axle weight ratings. :(

BozDMAZ has it correct - GVWR of the vehicle is one number. The axle ratings are another set of numbers. The summation of the axle ratings do not equal the GVWR of the vehicle (usually).

Typically, you will exceed the GVWR rating of the vehicle before those of the axles (ie. the manufacture builds in some margin on the axle ratings).

I was told that GM only rates their weights at 80% of capacity. Why???? I don't know. But they also told me that Ford and Dodge rate theirs at full capacity. I was told this by a GM salesman. What does he know??? Who knows.

Just got back from bishop CA. was up in the white mountains about 8900 ft. with truck and trailer wieght was 21780 pds. let me tell you I was surprised with the thing. pulled one climb from all most dead stop ( hair pin turn) 6 or 8 percent grade the dam thing was shifting up in gears 3rd was doing 35mph and climbing. before I had to make a turn into camp ground. It's kind of scary what the beast will do. And it's almost stock.any ways 395 to big pine then north on 168 for 18 miles if you have been on that road you know what I'm talking about. JD :D

The 2500/3500 HD need a higher GVWR. The Gen III Duramax/Allison has outgrown the frame/brakes. Any chance the GMT900 platform will show significant improvements in GVWR?

Tanker,
I moved my boat last weekend it weighs about 12,000 my truck is stock and the pyro was reading 800 to 900 when I was doing 75-80 mph. I was on I95 from NJ to Fla.
