Looking for a place to start looking...

Dad has a '77 Airstream Argosy motorhome with a 454/TH400 setup. While driving forward, all is well. When he puts the RV in reverse, transmission oil spews out. It wasn't too bad until he went to take it on a spin this weekend.

He fired up the engine and let it warm up. Put the transmission in gear and it wouldn't move. Pulled the trans dipstick and found it was down 3 quarts, and this was lost while the motorhome sat the past few weeks. Previously, it wouldn't leak trans fluid as it sat, only while moving in reverse.

So, does anyone have a good idea where to start looking for a leak like this? He's already looking at rebuilt TH400's, with the cheapest ones running about $850 just for the unit (not installed).

Plan B would be to take the motorhome to a reputable transmission shop, but he doesn't know of any in the area. Could anyone in the Harrisburg, PA area recommend one?

3 Quarts and you can't see a leak?
The only thing that moves in a different direction while in rev. is the shaft as it comes out of the rear of the trans. Is that seal slinging off oil to the underside of the truck body? If so you may only be dealing with a dry rear seal.
