I am looking upgrade my horse trailer to a unit with living quarters. The New trailer weight is 10400# and has a GVW of 14000#, I am concerned that this may be to much trailer for my truck and would like some other opinions.

That's about the weight of my 5'er, and I haul it all over the place with no problems, performance or weight legalities. As long as you keep your individual axle weights and truck GVW in check, you should have no problem with it. Hook it up and get it weighed to eliminate the confusion.

I've got a LQ horse trailer too. Empty wt is about 9,500 and gross is about 15,700. I'm usually at about 12,500 when hauling. As far as the ability of your truck to tow that size trailer, it shouldn't be a problem. I've been all over the Black Hills in So. Dakota and have never had any issues. Granted, the Black Hills aren't the Rockies but there are still some pretty good grades out there.

My truck is an '03 dually, totally stock, which I'm sure gives it a little more stability than your 3/4 ton but otherwise your truck should be rated to pull the same or more than mine.

Hi from another IAFF Brother! I have pulled over 16,000 once. The truck had no problem whatsoever pulling it even on the hills. I don't make it a habbit it was a situation where someone needed help with a load.Their New brandX truck broke down. And we pulled their trailer to a safe secure spot for them and the **** dealer towed their truck. We routinely tow a four horse gooseneck with midtack and LQ. With four horses and loaded for bear. Our truck will pull that and go as fast as you would want. Too fast actually! Especialy with horses on board. It will pull a 6% grade in excess of 65 mph with that load. We also pull a fifth wheel that is about 12ft tall (a real parachute) and weighs around 14,5000 lbs loaded. It will also pull that up the same grades at 65 mph. The truck's brakes are great and stops the loads very well also. The fact is these D/A's will pull a load much faster than it is safe to do so. I know when we were in the flatlands We were cruising at 85 for sustained period of time and it could have cruised a lot faster, probably right up to the limiter. I do know that these trucks will pull our Fifth wheel on level ground as fast as the computer/limiter will let it go. Of course the trailer tires wouldn't take that for long. And if any thing happened or you had to make a sudden stop or swerve, it wouldn't be pretty. I don't want to give anyone the impression that I drive wreckless, because I don't, but that's what these trucks are capable of with all of the power and torque that they have. I don't think you will be unhappy with the performance or handling of your truck. Keep those trailer brakes adjusted up and drive safe and enjoy those horses and your truck.
