Strike up a conversation about automatic transmissions for our GMC and Chevy diesel trucks, particularly the '82 - '89 6.2L trucks, and you will hear one of two opinions, both good and bad. We learn how a performance 700R4 is built and how it performs.

A little good news.... The 6.2L diesel has performed well for many people for over two decades and for hundreds of thousands of miles. Here's just one example that has been around the block a time or two.

Jim,

Very interesting article on your Dmax Power project. http://forum.thedieselpage.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif… Sounds like you are having some fun! :D

In particular the following snip caught my attention.

“Because I'm maintaining the original steering column (without a coded ignition key cylinder switch), I'll use a "PLDATA" bypass kit that allows the class-2 serial data communications to function without a coded ignition switch.”

What is the “PLDATA” bypass kit? Can it be used to bypass the Passlock system?

I’m currently having intermittent problems with the Passlock anti-theft system on my 01 Malibu. The “Theft System” light comes on randomly and sometimes goes in the protect mode which disables the fuel injection system. A real PAIN! (you have to wait 10 minutes with the key ON to reset it). I have had it checked with a Tech2 and several inconclusive codes were stored. It would be nice if there was a way to disable this anti theft system. I have read on some other forums that this is a common problem and some people have reported having their BCM and ignition switch replaced and still the problem persists. I believe there is a resistor in the key cylinder and a hall sensor that provide inputs for the BCM to monitor. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

GM uses a hall-effect sensor in the cylinder lock assy to verify that the proper key is being used to start the vehicle. http://www.bypasskit.com/ sells a bypass kit that will temporarily disable Passlock systems, and allow remote starters to work properly. You should be able to locate help at most security system (& stereo) installers in your area.

This is the approach I'm taking, but I also have a 2001 cylinder lock with key sensor to use as a backup, just in case.
