700R4 or 4L80E ?

Hey Doctor Lee, your 700R4 is kind of like taking a knife to a gun fight. Why spend all that money when you could have upgraded to 4L80E with a tranny controller for same money? Good advice or PAC money? ;)

That is about twice what I paid for my new setup (and by the way, I paid retail, no PAC contributions were accepted on this project). I would draw your attention to the latest 0 - 60 MPH times reported in said article.

Good Day!

Some folks actually prefer a properly-built 700R4 because of its significantly lower 1st gear. Hot Rod mag did an article a few years ago, suggesting it to be a REALLY good auto tranny for pulling trailers, WHEN PROPERLY BUILT.

That`s the key alright,when properly built.The 700R4 is a more"swap-friendly"unit that we will be seeing around for a long time.Thanks to all the people that have worked the bugs out.

What 4l80E trans and controller have you found for the price of the 700R4? I would be VERY interested in throwing some 700's in the trash for a good 4l80e.

GM made stand alone 4L80E computers (TCM) for use with 6.5 Diesels. Shouldn't be too hard to find one. Price should be $75-150 for a good used one. I can tell you they work great.

How about some part numbers ? 91-93 vans 16147609 and 94-95 vans 16196390 . As Bobbie Martin has posted , these are TCM's so no turbo or EFI .

The 16196390 came in G & P Vans, basically step vans, mini busses, etc. They were put in until 99 in some of the P Chassis. If you are interested, email me and I can provide wiring diagrams.

Are the shift points and TCC lock up the same as in a PCM controlled 80le?
