I know the "C" has an EGR system and the "J" does not. Also I think the heads are different and thats about the limit of my knowledge. can you help out a newbe?

The heads are almost the same, with the difference that GM was playing around with valve diameters, sometimes making the heavy duty valves bigger, but not always. The final conclusion was at the relatively low speeds of our engines, valve diameter was not a super-critical variable.

Also, the DB-2 fuel injection pump calibrations were different, with the heavy duty engines being less constrained by emissions, and squirting in more fuel for more power.

Keep asking questions; we all started out where you are and learned only by asking questions that others could answer.
