Hello, Good doctor!

I'm going to be replacing the brakes on my wife's 98 Dodge Neon, and on my 96 Ford this weekend. I've always just installed the new pads/shoes, inspected the rotors/drums and had them turned or replaced if needed, and then driven normally. However, I recently read somewhere that after installation of new pads/shoes, I should do a series of hard stops to break in the new brakes.

Can you, or anyone else, tell me if this is correct, and/or give me the proper procedure?

Thank you!

Casey

It really depends on the mfg and the friction materials used. We used to have to get the new brakes on the IMSA cars glowing red to break them in properly. Go with whatever procedure is recommended by the manufacturer.
