Howdy Dr. Lee,

I know you

Can't you have a crankshaft re-nitrided after it is ground?

Yes, if you can find the heat-treater with the proper furnace and fixturing to hang the crank vertically while it is nitrided. Then it has to go BACK to the machine shop to polish (not grind) the journals back to the correct surface finish, then check the crank for straightness and indexing of the throws.

At The Diesel Depot, many stripped-down engines have bad blocks, so Jamie is collecting lots of all parts except blocks. I would try them for a good used crank to replace one that needed grinding.

Dr. Lee,

I was wondering if you discussed this with Ron Schoolcraft. He ground his crank .010" under. With all the work and money he's put into his engine, I'd hate to know he has a weak link in the system now.

Since i asked the original question i thought i would post a follow up. I had my crank ground .010/.010 nitrided then repolished when it was rebuilt following the process Lee described. It cost me $125 for the heat treating alone.
