Want to install the newer type 4x4 actuater.

Chev garage has 2 PN's: 1 for 1500/2500 series
and one for 3500 series,

K3500 cable is twice cost of 1500/2500 cable.
Why different, Why more money,
I thougt k2500 & K3500 front axle was the same...

I haven't seen enough 3500 front diffs to know for sure, but it was stated a couple years ago (IIRC) that the 3500's were getting an iron cased front differential.

Thanks Jim, Guess I will have to figure out the PN diffferance by myself,

Your dealer can review TSB # 76-43-01A under Doc # 533269 for further direction. I think all series use the same actuator but the replacement wiring harnesses are different. Having the 3-digit code off the front axle assembly or the truck's option label will help determine what harness you need. There is more to it than just plugging in a new actuator.

stumo, please can you give me some additional info,
on differances, ( ? more to it than plugging in new actuater)
I know I need a 12V source, any additional changes..

OK, Let's start over:

Here's my problem ( I screwed up ) , wanted 3.73 gears

I installed a 2000 IFS in my 96 K3500 , the actuater for
the 4 wheel drive was different so I changed the right
stub shaft ( replaced 2000 IFS shaft/actuater with the
stub shaft from my original 96 )

since then ( I think the problem correlates time wise )
I have had a intermittent dragging feel when I drive empty and I am not loading the engine. I have checked just about
everything, Ran it on a lift, axles not engaged, drive
shaft , ditto, checked brakes , new unverisals ,also, rear end perfect.
, engine parameters on scanner , also how no signs of engine urging , Can not figure out what the problem is,

SO: I want to restore the fron IFS to stock 2000,
to see if there is some grabing of the stub shaft to the
differancial.
IE: replace the right stub shaft with the 2000 unit.
To see if problem goes away.

Problem, How to get actuater wired to 96 wiring.

Please does anyone have an electrical diagram for a
2000 K 3500, I have the 96 wiring....

rjwest, wish I had more on the harness differences but I dont. I'm assuming GM made them to be a plug-n-play on various makes and models and thus the diff. As far as I know the new actuators have 12+ w/ign on, ground, and a 12+ trigger.

But read your last post and got to thinking about the dragging feel you sometimes have. I'm assuming that is in 2Hi. My experience with the front axles is they are either fully engaged or not engaged at all. Anything in between results in a pretty nasty grinding noise.

By any chance have you measured the circumference of all 4 tires? Weird things can happen even in 2WD when the variance gets too high.

And if you have an auto trans I'm wondering if something might be going on with it giving you engine braking when it shouldn't. I guess watching the tach might help there.

Maybe this will help. I don't know if you have the 2000 actuator connector or not but if you do here's the pin assignments.

Pin A is a black/white wire that serves as an input to the electronic brake module.

Pin B is a light blue wire that is the 12V+ signal to engage

Pin C is a brown wire that is 12V+ when the key is in the Run position

Pin D is unused

Pin E is a ground

Thanks stumo"

( Wiring )I think I can figure it outnow,

Good point on the 'tach', don't recall seeing any fluctuation. will check again,

? is the engage in the front diff a gear/cog or some
type of clutch ?

Tires, all same, worn equally.

Transmission feels OK, don't know if it's in the torque
converter, figured if it was trans, it would have gotten worse.

I did add a sway bar about the same time, noticed a
slight change in steering when going over uneven roads,

Does not occur when loaded, but it is so slight that
it probably not be felt with additional weight.

Can't decide if I want to keep the truck , other issues,
Was trying to fix all the other things before I install
another engine,

Thanks again.

[QUOTE=rjwest]? is the engage in the front diff a gear/cog or some

It's just a sleeve that slides over 2 gears to lock them together.

Good luck,
