Question on used engine

I have an engine from an 82 1 ton that I removed. The motor was said to be a 6.5L at the auction. I was after the Gear Vendor unit, so it did not matter at the time. I have removed the engine from the truck and was looking to figure out if it really was a 6.5l or 6.2L, the tag on the valve cover says 6.2L goodwrench (I assume it was a replacement). I have some casting numbers, driver side rear says "J 23"? Can anyone tell me how I can tell what I have?

Chevy Garage says it is not a 6.5L, not interchangable. Hmmmm.

6.2 and 6.5 are very interchangeable. Some versions even
share the same block casting number (599).

Regarding Your engine I would trust the id tag from Goodwrench,
until I found anything that contradicts it.

stupid Question but where would you find the casting numbers?

at the front of the block just below the passenger side head it should be stamped with a 6.2d, if its a 6.2.. casting # is rear of the block just below the drivers side head..
