Could be the NSBU taking a dump on you. A worst case would be the instrument panel itself. It shouldn't be anything more serious than that.

most likely water in the safety switch on the slector shaft on the trans. (NSBU) they will go from tiem to time, My 2001 had two of them and my buddies 2002 truck just got its second one. Both truck had about 80K on them when the second one was put in , wet roads and snow kill them .

You will need a new instrument cluster. There is a guy whose # I got that will rebuld your instrument cluster. I will get you his # & address if you still need it repaired. You will have to ship it to him and will turn it around in a day or so. He told me it would only cost about $80.00 or so plus shipping. You may have to wait until he has one to rebuild though....

The NSBU (Neutral Safety Back-Up) switch is the most likely cause of this problem. They are about $50 when purchased through an Allison dealer (about $100 from a GM dealer). I'd try that before pulling the IP cluster. :)

If your truck had <100k, the NBSU falls under warranty!

I replaced my original "black" NSBU switch on my "02" about 3 years ago with the new style tan switch, which was supposed to last longer.
I coated both of the electrical connectors with dielectric grease prior to connecting, which was an attempt to keep moisture out of electrical plug.
Been going about three years with no problems.
