how can i flash a 96 k3500 to check for any logged or active codes ?

You'll need a Tech-II or compatible scanner. Auto parts store scanners (Actron, etc.) work for most code reading, and are relatively cheap. The 1996 and later models are OBD-II. The "paper clip" method only works on 1995 and earlier OBD-I models.
