I've owned my truck for over a year now and it's giving me problems for the first time. When I went to start it last night the glow plugs would not cycle and the truck would not start. The light for the glow plugs didn't even come on. I tried to get them to come on several times with no luck. Please give me some ideas on whats wrong so I can get my baby back on the road. Thanks!

Opps I ment to put this in the 6.2L message board sorry

First thought - while you're waiting for a good answer... there are quite a few and they do get cruddy (Engine bay) and any under the dash.

Assuming all the fuses are OK, and that there aren't any electrical issues, I'd look at the 1982-84 glow controller as the problem. These were less reliable than that used in the 1985 and newer 6.2L diesels.

In any case, the online Member's Area 6.2/6.5 Troubleshooting Resource (http://www.thedieselpage.com/members/guide.htm) contains chapters on all of the various glow systems used in the 6.2L & 6.5L GM diesels.

Personally, if this were a trucks I planned to keep for any length of time, I'd convert it use the 1985-93 glow controller. The newer style glow controller is less expensive and has a better reliability record. The part numbers and various other info are included in the above mentioned chapters.

Good luck,

Jim

Thread moved from 6.5 to 6.2 forum.

Great link and infomation posted above by MP.

My suggestion is as always, check all the electrical connections on both the glow plug controller (rear of driver's side head, round cylinder looking device) and connections to the relay on the driver's side fender well.

Make sure that the solenoid is getting power via the battery terminal on the driver's side.

Converting the 1984 electromechanical nightmare to the 85-93 all electrical control is pretty easy - I did it with a bunch of spectators watching, at the second Rendezvous in 2000. The article is in the 2001 reprint book from TheDieselPage.com.

Well, Dr. Lee wrote the article, but I did the work. Those are The Clevite Kid's hands getting dirty in the pictures.

One nice thing about the early system is that you can jumper the relay on the right fender with any number of things such as a pocket knife or even loose change and the relay will close allowing you to get the plugs hot.
My 84 still has the old style and its seems to be fine. I am however going to change to the new style when the engine gets dropped into the Hummer kit car.
My first thought would be to screw in a new controller and it should work fine again.
